Instantly Lord Undreeshwarar prevented her from this action.  She consoled Sundarar that the miseries followed in his life due to the evil Karma in the past.  She assured him that he would be blessed by Lord to regain his vision very soon.  But Sundarar was deeply distressed at the silence of Lord and questioned his presence in this temple.  As an answer to his staunch devotee, Lord flipped a stick towards Sundarar and revealed his presence.  Sundarar’s devotion towards Lord was similar to Arjuna’ reverence to Lord Krishna, they both had chosen the Sakha Marg (As a friend) to worship Lord.

Thiru Naminandi Adigal was born in a village called Thiruemaperur located on the banks of River Cauvery in Tiruvarur.  This village was prominent place for the performance of Vedic rituals and the people of the village were zealous devotee of Lord Shiva and Shaiva Siddhantha.  Thiru Namminandi Adigal was born in a Brahmin family; he was well versed with the Veda Sastras and he was a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva.  He was an ardent devotee of Lord Achaleswarar/Araneriappar and his consort Goddess Vandarkuzhali Ammai located in Thiruemaperur in the Kingdom of Chola.

Naminandi Adigal worshipped Lord Achaleswara and His consort Goddess Vandarkuzhali Ammai in this temple; he lit the lamps of the temple and found immense pleasure in visualizing the enchanting beauty of Lord in the brilliance of the earthen lamp.  Once, he had the earnest desire to light the lamp in the entire praharams of Lord, unfortunately the oil required for lightening the lamp was insufficient.  So he decided to borrow some oil and approached a villager who was staying round the corner of the temple.  He knocked the door of the villager; unfortunately it was the house of a Jain follower.  He listened carefully to Naminandi Adigal and started pouring harsh words on him.  He derisively passed comments on Adigalar and asked him to light the lamp with water.  Naminandi Adigalar, who was already burnt his egos in him, he was not moved an inch at the contemptuous remarks of the Jain follower.  Adigalar was tormented purely at the thought of lack of oil to light the lamp and serve the Lord.  He solemnly prayed to Lord, he could listen to a mysterious voice authoritatively instructing him to bring water from the nearby pond and lighten the lamp.  He followed the voice sincerely; he brought water from the pond and carefully poured them on the earthen lamp, stuffed in with the cotton thread and lit the lamp.  The earthen lamps were started to glow brilliantly as ever at the supreme grace of Lord.   Naminandi Adigal continued this practice for several days.  All the Jains were alarmed at the devout act of Adigalar.  This incident made the people’s faith in Jainism shattered to a great extent.  Thus Naminandi Adigalar restored the belief in Shaiva Siddhantha and devotion to Lord Shiva in this sacred land successfully.

Naminandi Adigal’s devout act captured the attention of the Chola King who was on the throne; he provided immense wealth for the temple’s reformation and services.  Tiruvar is a sacred land of Lord also known for temple festivities.  Naturally the temple authorities were decided to celebrate the festival Panguni Uthram in a grand manner.  As a part of the celebration, the presiding deity has taken for a village procession to Thirumanalai, where the devotees of different caste and creed were assembled to worship Lord.  Nayanar accompanied the procession that night he got home drained and drifted to sleep immediately.  His chaste wife noticed the difference in him and enquired him about his daily worship of Lord before go to sleep.  He was reluctantly answered her that the crowd assembled in the procession made him impure, he instructed her to bring water to bathe so that he could resume his worship.  She went to fetch water for her husband.  Soon Nayanar was drifted back to sleep.  He had a dream in that Lord enlighten him with the knowledge that the people who were born in Tiruvarur are his ‘Ganas’, so Nayanar need not be concerned about any impurities.  Nayanar woke up abruptly with a frisson and great realization.  He deeply regretted at his notion about the caste and creed and resumed his worship.  In the early dawn, the couple arrived at the temple in Tiruvarur; Nayanar visualized the Ganas of Lord in whoever they met on their way.  He was in a blissful state, he prostrated before them praising the glories of Lord.  He continued his self-less service to the devotees of Lord.  Later, Saint Thirunavukkarasar sung praising the self-less nature of Naminandi Adigal in one his compositions.  Finally, Naminandi Adigal attained the Abode of Lord Shiva in Tiruvar.

In the Tamil month Vaikasi – Pusam is widely celebrated as ‘Guru Puja’ day of Naminandi Adigal, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.

Thiruneelanakka Nayanar was born in a Brahmin family situated in Thiruchathamangai, one of the flourished lands in the Chola Dynasty.  Thiruchathamangai is once of the sacred place where the temple of Lord Shiva – Ayavandheeshwar with his consort Goddess Ubaya Pushpa Vilochani is located, the people in this village were Vedic scholars and true followers of Shaiva Siddhantha.

Thiruneelanakka Nayanar was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and a Vedic Scholar; he performs ritualistic worship of Lord Shiva on daily basis.  He and his dutiful wife receive the devotees of Lord with utmost respect and provide them with their basic needs.

On the auspicious day of Thiruvathirai, Thiruneelanakka Nayar with his virtuous wife arrived at the temple of Lord Ayavanthishwarar and the couple prostrated before the Lord.  The devoted couple meticulously arranged all the offerings before the Lord and Nayanar immersed in the worship of Lord.  Nayanar fervently circumamabulated the deity as a concluding part of the worship, instantaneously he noticed a spider fell on the top of the Linga with a dull sound.  Nayanar’s wife was ready to act; she instantly blew it off from the Linga without distracting Nayanar’s worship of Lord.  Nayanar noticed the innocent action of his wife and he was totally traumatized.  Though she was acted out of pure love for Lord, he protested her deed as against the sastras and rituals.  He contemptuously critized her act as sheer ignorance and the salaiva could have made the Linga impure.   He was frustrated left the place leaving his wife in the temple.

That night, Nayanar was deeply distraughted and restless.  His devoted wife stayed behind temple premise itself, in this way she sincerely followed her husband’s order.  The most compassionate Lord appeared before Nayanar in his dream; He revealed the blotches in his body and the discoloration and swelling caused by the spider.  He also exposed the other part of his body where Nayanar’s wife blew off the spider was flawless without any blemishes.  Nayanar was irrepressible and full of joy; he praised the Lord for His boundless affection.  He rushed to the temple at the early dawn, he prostrated before the deity for forgiveness.  He brought his wife home and the righteous couple continued their self-less service to Lord.

Thiruneelanakka Nayanar had great admiration towards Thiru Gnana Sambandhar.  He developed an intense affection towards Sambandhar and wholeheartedly desired to serve the great devotee of Lord.  In the meantime, Sambandhar carried out a spiritual tour to Thiruchathamangai and the neighboring places with his fellow devotee Thiruneelakanta Yazhpanar and a group of devotees.  Thiruneelanakka Nayanar was elated at the information and enthusiastically made all arrangements to receive the great devotee and his followers.  The whole pathways were decorated with flowers, Nayanar singing and praising the glories of Lord received Sambandhar and the entire group.  The entire devotees were served by Thiruneelanakka Nayanar and his virtous wife.  It was end of the day, Sambandhar instructed Nayanar to provide a safe place for Yazhpanar (he was born in an outcasted family) and his wife. Initially, Thiruneelanaka Nayanar was little hesitant to accommodate them inside the house.  Later, Nayanar found a place near arena of sacrificial fire for Yazhpanar and his wife.  As soon as the couple entered, the fire from the sacrificial arena lit as its own.  Nayanar was astounded to witness this miracle; his mounted egos of caste and creed were crushed instantly.

Sambandhar made a visit to the temple of Lord Ayavanthishwarar, he sang praising the glorief of Lord and he also mentioned the supreme qualities of Thiruneelanakka Nayanar in a few beautiful verses.  When it was the time for Sambandhar to leave the place Thiruneelanakka Nayanar sincerely desired to accompany the great saint and assist him in his spiritual endeavor.  Sambandhar earnestly refused to follow him and instructed Nayanar to carry out his honorable service to Lord and his devotees.

Thiruneelanakka Nayanar had the longing to be with Sambandhar grown out of reach.  His desires were fulfilled when he was invited to attend the wedding ceremony of Sambandhar.  This was the most supreme occasion Thiruneelanakka Nayanar merged in to the brilliance of rays from Lord and attained Salvation.

In the Tamil month Vaikasi – Moolam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja Day, the day Thiruneelanakka Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.

Thiruppasoor/Tirupasur/Thirupachur is one of the 275 Thevara Shiva Sthalam known as Nadu Nadu Shiva Sthalam situated in Thiruvallur district.  In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of self-manifested linga.  Sri Sankara Bhagavad Padal visited this shrine and installed a Sri Chakra in the Ardha Mandapam.  The daily offerings are made to Sri Chakra.  In this temple Lord Vassesswarar has known ‘Perumal Vinai Theertha Eswaran’, giving dharshan to his devotees in ‘Thirumanakolam’ (wedding attire) with his consort Goddess Thankathalai Thayar.  Vinayaka Mandapam consists of 11 Ganeshas and majestic rajagopuram are the major attractions of this temple.

Previously, the place where the temple stood was a woods land full of Bamboo Tree.  Once, the cattle brought here to graze went on milking in a particular place slightly high from the ground in a raised platform.  The cowherd was astounded to witness the miracle and informed the senior authorities.  The King arrived here with his men and carried out the excavation process.  While the process was at its peak there found blood gushing from this place.  Later, the whole processes were put down for quite sometime.  Afterwards the miracles happend in King’s life turned him to become an ardent devotee of Lord.  Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and instructed the King to build a temple on that particular place of Bamboo forest.  This is the place where Lord Vishnu prayed to Lord Shiva to remove the sins of killing the demons Madhu and Kaitaba.

There are many legends associated with this temple.  Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument about their supremacy.  Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a huge Linga to resolve the issue between the two deities.  Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and dived into sky and Lord Vishnu turned out a wild boar and plunged into the Earth with an intention to find the beginning and the end of huge Linga.  Later, Lord Brahma returned with a wrong witness of Thazhampoo (Ketaki - screwpine) flower and Lord Vishnu came out with his sincere remarks.  Lord Shiva cursed the Ketaki flower and lost its presence in all the rituals forever.  Later, the most compassionate Lord blessed Ketaki flower that her presence would be permissible only on the day of Mahashivratri rituals.  During the Mahashivratri Ketaki flower is used to worship the Linga of presiding deity Lord Vassesswarar in this temple.

Another legend has that Goddess Sati sacrificed her life in the the Yagna conducted by her father Daksha Prajapathi.  After Satis ruin, she came down to earth and performed severe austerities to reunite with the Lord.  Lord Shiva found Goddess Parvati in this place and the divine couple reunited once again.  Therefore, Goddess came to known as ‘Thankathali’ in this temple.
