Saint Sundarar was married to Sangili Nachiyar, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.    Sundarar took marriage vow in front of Lord of Thiruvotiyur; he promised Sangili Nachiyar that he would perform all the duties and responsibilities of a husband and remain faithful to her.   Somehow, Sundarar could not keep up his promises towards Sangili Nachiyar and they got separated.  Shortly, Sundarar married to Paravai Nachiyar and lived in Tiruvarur.  Eventually Sundarar was on his spiritual journey to Thiruvottiyur, all of a sudden he was afflicted with blindness.  He realized his fault, Sundarar with utter guilt and shame prayed to Lord for forgiveness.  Sundarar continued his journey with the troubled eyesight proceeded to Tiruvarur.  On his way he worshipped Lord Undreeshwarar and Goddess Minnoli Thayar in this temple.  He earnestly prayed to Goddess Minnoli Thayar, the kindhearted Mother of the Universe was prepared to escort him throughout his journey. Instantly Lord Undreeshwarar prevented her from this action.  She consoled Sundarar that the miseries followed in his life due to the evil Karma in the past.  She assured him that he would be blessed by Lord to regain his vision very soon.  But Sundarar was deeply distressed at the silence of Lord and questioned his presence in this temple.  As an answer to his staunch devotee, Lord flipped a stick towards Sundarar and revealed his presence.  Sundarar’s devotion towards Lord was similar to Arjuna’ reverence to Lord Krishna, they both had chosen the Sakha Marg (As a friend) to worship Lord.

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.AM in the mornings and 4.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
