Linga Puranam - Glory of Dwadhashakshara Mantra !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Linga Puranam describes the glory of Dwadhashakshar Mantra 'Om Namo Baghavathey Vasudevaya'.

Sage Sutji describes to the sages that the Dwadhashakshara Mantra provides Salvation to who really seeks 'Brahmam' - the Supreme Lord with the recurring thoughts of Lord Vishnu and chanting the Dwadhakshara Mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavathey Vasudevaya'.  The Dwadhashakshara consists of twelve letters which has the power to attain the highest spiritual well being, the attainment of nearness to Lord Vishnu and Sri Mahalakshmi.

Once there lived a Brahmin who had the habit of stammering while speaking.  He had a son - Etareva.  The Brahmin spent pretty good time to teach his son the Dwadhashakshara Mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavathey Vasudevaya'.  Though he tried to teach his son the Mantra with his sincere effort, he could not become successful at his endevour.  In the meantime, the Brahmin who happened to marry for the second time, as he was unhappy with his first wife.  In his second marriage, the Brahmin got many studious children.

Etareva continued his life with his mother.  His habit of stammering did not take him anywhere.  After seeing the intelligence of the step brothers of Etareva, his mother started blaming and cursing him for his fate.  She was very upset and unhappy with Etareva's stammering habit.  All her step sons were intelligent and thereby, they attained good respect and fame within the society.  It made her to put an end to her life. She declared her intention to her son - Etareva.  Etareva was deeply worried at the remarks of his mother and started chanting and practising the Dwadhashakshara Mantra sincerely.  Finally, he had been able to chant the Dwadhashakshara Mantra ' Om Namo Bhagavathey Vasudevaya' without stammering.

Once Etareva happened to pass by the place where the Yagna was being  held.  As soon as he reached the Yagna place, all the priests who were immersed in chanting Yagna Mantra lost their voices.  It brought an abrupt silence in the Yagna procedures. All the priests were panic struck and tried to bring out their voice by pronouncing the Mantra.  After seeing the sudden change of the situation, Etareva started to chant the Dwadhashakshara Mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavathey Vasudevaya' with good pronounciation and clarity.  Immediately all the priests regained their voices and continued the Yagna procedures.  Later, Etareva became the renowned scholar as a result of his continuous chanting of the Dwadhashakshara Mantra.

The greatness of Dwadhashakshara Mantra removes all the sins and brings attainment of the Lotus feet of Lord Vishnu.

Hara Hara Nama Parvathi Pathaye    Hara Hara Mahadeva !!

Linga Puranam describes the glory of Kshadakshara Mantra which consists of a six letter word : 'Om Nama Shivaya'.

During the Threytha Yuga (Meghavahan Kalpa), there lived a Brahmin - Dhundhamukh.  Due to the curse of a Sage, he became immoral possessing all wicked habits.   His wife gave birth to a child on the day of Amavasya.  The astrologers predicted a very bleak future for the new born.  As the child grew up, he possessed all the immoral behaviours of his father.   Though his parents found a girl to marry him and got married from the virtuous family.  He had illicit relationship with an outcasted woman. One day, he had an argument with the woman and in a sudden rage he killed her.  As a revenge on Dhundhamukh's son,  the outcasted woman's family assassinated the entire family of Dhundhamukh - his wife and daughter-in-law.  Dhundhamukh's son took vengeance on the family of the outcasted woman.

The sudden disheartened events brought Dhundhamukh's son  aversion towards  life and he started wandering aimlessly.  Finally, he reached the hermitage of a Sage.  The sage was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.  He taught Dhundhamukh's son about the rituals of Pashupath Vrata and  the Glory of Kshadakshaa Mantra - 'Om Nama Shivaya' .  He continued to live an  austere life chanting the Kshadakshara Mantra ' Om Nama Shivaya' .  The glory of the Kshadakshara Mantra and the austere life brought him and his ancestors 'Salvation' and they attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.

Linga Puranam - The Birth of Nandi !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Linga Puranam describes the birth of Lord Nandi.  There was a sage named Shilada who  underwent severe penance to have a boon - A child with immortality. Lord Indra pleased of the austerities of Shilada, appeared in front of him to offer a boon.  After hearing the request of Shilada and his desire to have an immortal child, Lord Indra suggested him to pray to Lord Shiva who could provide the boon, nobody else could provide such a boon.

Sage Shilada continued his penance for thousand years.  He was totally immovable for many years, so the termites settled on his body and slowly started to build up their nest. Finally, his whole body was covered up by them.  The insects started to eat his flesh and imbibed his blood.  At  last, only bones remained.  Lord Shiva appeared in front of him  and provided  the boon for an immortal child.  Lord Shiva proclaimed that He himself will be born as his child.  Moreover, Lord Shiva provided Sage Shilada his old form with a single touch.

Sage Shilada performed Yagna and a child appeared from the sacrificial fire.  The child had three eyes and four arms and he was holding a Trident and a Mace in both hands.  His body was claded in armour  made out of diamonds.  The celestial dancers and singers performed on this auspicious occasion and the deities showered flowers on the child.  The boy was named  'Nandi' - who brings joy.

Shilada brought the child home, immediately the boy lost his divine appearance to an  ordinary child.  The child completely forgot all about his birth.  Sage Shilada was worried about the sudden change.  He devoted his time for the bringing up the child, his education etc..By the age of seven the boy was well versed  in  Veda and all sacred texts.

One day the two deities - Mitra and Varuna visited Sage Shilada.  At the first sight of the boy, they commented : Though the boy had all auspicious signs, he would have a very short life.  The boy woulld not live after the age of eight.  Sage Shilada was   mortified at this remark.  Nandi could not bear his father's sorrow, he began to pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before him and blessed him.  Lord Shiva adorned the boy with a necklace around his neck which he was wearing, and made him immortal.  Lord Shiva blessed the child and declared that he would be worshipped along with Him .  Immediately the boy got all the divine powers, three eyes and ten hands.  Soon He was adopted as the child of Goddess Parvati.

Lord Shiva's companions are known as 'Ganas'.  Lord Ganeshwara is the Leader of his army and Nandi is also treated as one amongst them.

Linga Puranam - Yugas and Life style !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Parithranaya Sadhunam Vinashaya Chathushkrutham
Dharma Samsthapanarthaya Sambavami Yugey Yugey

Linga Puranam describes the life style of the people during the Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga and Kali Yuga.

In Satya Yuga people lived happily.  There was no need of Heaven or Hell.  The weather was neither cold nor hot.   The yield from the earth was abundant in supply.  All were treated  equal, neither Superior nor Inferior, no hatred or Jealousy, No thirst or Hunger. They do not require shelter or comfort, they slept on the seashore, forest and mountains.   People were truly righteous.

In Treta Yuga, things were changed. The clouds started forming and raining heavily.  The yield from the Earth somewhat  changed, people depended more on trees for shade.  People started to fight over the possession of the trees for fruits, shade   and clothing.  The increasing demand for the tree resulted in disappearing  of the same.  The heat and cold began.  In order to save themselves from these climatic conditions, people realised the need for homes.  When there was no trees to provide fruits any longer, they understood the need of  agriculture along with animal husbandry.

In Dwapara Yuga everything had changed.  All the evil characteristics started to show up.  All kinds of malpractices, jealousy, hatred, quarrels took place.  The scarcity for foodgrains began for the first time.

Kali Yuga is the worst period of all.  Lack of respect and moral values.  No worship of God and disbelief in holy scriptures are seen.  The Shudras overruled the rest of the Varnas.  Kings became theives and vice versa.  Lending money for higher interest rates, the yield from the land reduced drastically.  The life span of  people also reduced considerably.  One and only positive effect is that, a little righteousness provide a huge merit during the Kali Yuga.

When the Kali era vanishes, Pramiti (Kali) , the tenth form of Lord Mahavishnu will take place for the re-establishment of righteousness on Earth.
