There seven sacred shrines of Lord Shiva worshipped by Saptharishis is located in Mylapore, Chennai.  These are the temples where Sage Atri, Sage Angira, Sage Brighu, Sage Vashishta, Sage Gauthama and Sage Kutsa (Krishna Yajur Veda) worshipped Lord Shiva.
 
1 Thirumayilai Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple is one of the Sapthasthana Kshethram worshipped Sage Kashyapa.
 
2 Sri Velliswarar Temple/Vellecharam is one of the Sapthasthana Kshethram worshipped by Sage Angira is situated adjacent to Thirumayili Sri Kapaleeshwarar Temple.  Sage Shukracharya, the preceptor of Demons worshipped Lord Shiva in order to regain the vision that was lost during the Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

3. Sri Valiswarar Temple is one of the Sapthasthana Kshethram worshipped by Sage Gauthama is situated in Gopathi Narayana Chetty Street, Opp.Kolavizhiamman Temple, Mylapore, Chennai.  Vali underwent severe penance worshipping on Lord Shiva and attained immense might.

4. Sri Theerthapaleswarar Temple is one of the Sapthasthana Kshetram of Lord Shiva  worshipped by Sage Atri is located in Triplicane Mira Sahib Market, Mylapore, Chennai.  Sage Agastya underwent severe austerities in this sacred shrine.  Sri Theerthapaleshwar deity will lead all the Sapthasthana deities for the grand procession during the magnificent festival of Theerthavari/float festival conducted during the month of Masi.

7. Sri Malleswarar Temple/Mallecharam is one of the Sapthasthana Kshethram of Lord Shiva was worshipped by Sage Bhrigu located close to Karaneswarar temple, Mylapore, Chennai.  Previously this sacred place was full of Jasmine creeper hence the deity has got the name Sri Malleswarar.

Saptha Sthana Sthalangal are the prominent seven temples of Lord Shiva located within the vicinity of Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. These temple’s myths are closely associated to the celestial wedding of Lord Nandikeshwara with the daughter of Sage Vyagrapadha.
 

This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.00 PM in the morning and 5.30 PM to 7.30 PM in the evenings.

Thiruppunthuruthi/Saptha Sthana Sthalanagal is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.




Presiding deity – Thiru Pushpavananathar / Pushpavaneswarar/ with his consort Goddess Sri Soundarya Nayaki/Azhakalamarndha Nayaki

In this temple Lord Nandikeshwara can be seen moved to a side to some extent, keeping a good view of the presiding deity. This is one of the sacred temples where Appar conducted his self-less service (Uzhavara Thiruppani) to Lord for several years. He kept the temple premises and its surroundings spick and span. During this period of time, Appar composed many glorious verses praising the Lord. Thiru Gnana Sambandhar visited this temple and found the temple premises were kept immaculate by Appar. Sambandhar was hesitant to taint the floor and refused to step inside the temple. Lord was pleased at the humbleness of Sambandhar and instructed Lord Nandikeshwara to move to one side so that Sambandhar can have the clear vision of Lord.

The legend has that Thiru Gnana Sambandhar on his way back from the Kingdom of Pandya (Madurai) happened to learn about Thirunavukkarasar and his self-less service (Uzhavarappani) to Lord. Sambandhar’s yearning to meet the zealous devotee Appar has become irrepressible and proceeded to Thirupoomthurai. Likewise, Appar also came to known about the visit of Thiru Gnana Sambandhar to his village. Appar who was always treated himself as less-important does not want to reveal his identity; he stepped inside the crowd to carry the ceremonial carriage in which Sambandhar was travelling. When the carriage was nearing to the village, Sambandhar enquired about the hermitage of great Saint Appar. Appar generously answered that he was the blessed one who carrying the ceremonial carriage (Ungal Sivikayai Thangum Peyar Petru Ingullen). Instantaneously, Sambandhar dived out of the carriage and passionately paid obeisance to Appar, both the saints were in a state of bliss and compassionately paid reverence to each other. Sambandhar continued to stay at the hermitage of Appar for some years and enjoyed the heavenly company of two intellectuals together.




Appar composed many incredible verses praising the glories of Lord. In one of his compositions Appar enlighten us about the purpose of Pancha Indriyas such as eyes, ears, mouth, hands and legs and their function should be make the most for praising the glories of Lord.




This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.00 PM in the morning and 4.30PM to 7.30PM in the evening.

Thirukkandiyur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva situated on the southern banks of River Cauvery, (confluences of River Vadavar,Vennar, Vettar and Kudamurutti) located in a village called Thirukandiyur in Thanjavur , Tamil Nadu.

This temple also enshrines Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswathy, Shrine for Lord Subramanya. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of self- manifested Linga, also known as one of the Sapthasthanas of Lord Shiva. The other Sapthasthanas are Thiruppanthuruthi, Thirupazhanam,Thiruvedhikudi, Thillaisthanam and Thiruchotruthurai.

The legend has that Lord Shiva plucked one of the five heads of Lord Brahma which represents five elements of the Nature, as a result Lord Shiva was afflicted with Brahmahathi sin. Due to the curse, Lord Shiva lost his glories, he underwent severe penance and visited temples of Lord Vishnu to get rid of the sin. Lord Shiva arrived at Karambanur, visited Lord Purushothamar and Goddess Poornavalli Thayar’s Temple. The most compassionate Goddess Poornavalli Thayar served with food to Lord Shiva and the curse was removed partially, thus his persistent hunger was removed. But Lord Brahma’s skull remains stuck on Lord Shiva’s hand. At the divine instruction of Lord Purushothamar, Lord Shiva arrived in Thirukkandiyur. Lord Shiva worshipped Lord Kamalanathar and entirely eradicated from the sin of Brahmahathya.

The legend has that Sage Shiladha underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva for a virtuous offspring. Subsequently, Lord Nandikeshwara was born to him. Lord Nandikeshwara was chief of Ganas and the prime attendant of Lord Shiva. In due course of time, Lord arranged marriage of Nandikeshwara with the daughter of Sage Vyagrapadha. The marriage was took place in Thirumazhaipadi. The compassionate Lord accompanied the celestial couple and visited Saptha Sthana Sthalangal to perform one of the Vedhic rituals Sapthapadhi. In this way, Lord Nandikeshwara completed his marriage vow by visiting Thiruaiyarappar at Thiruvaiyaru, Thiru Abathsahayeswarar at Thirupazhanam, Thiru Uddhavaneswarar at Thiruchotruthurai, Thirukkandeswarar at Thirukkandiyur, Thiru Pushpavanathar at Thirupanthuruthi and Thiru Neyyadiappar at Thiruneithanam respectively. In order to commemorate this divine incident, every year a famous festival takes places in the Saptha Sthana Sthalangal. During this time, the idol of the presiding deity of Thiruvedhikkudi will be taken out for procession in a beautifully decorated palanquin to visit the seven shrines of Lord Shiva known for Saptha Sthana Sthalangal accompanied by the village deity.

 


Worship of Thiru Vedapureeswarar with his consort Goddess Thiru Mangayakkarasi provides ultimate wisdom and knowledge.

Thiruchotruthurai/Saptha Sthana Sthalam is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva located on the river banks of Kudamuruttiyaru. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

The legend has that there was a pious couple Arularar with his wife were passionate devotee of Lord Shiva lived in Thiruchotruthurai. Once, the entire villagers were struck with drought and famine. The people of this village started to leave this place searching for livelihood. The temple of Thiruchotruthurainathar remained neglected for long time. But Arulalar stayed behind this temple shedding tears to Lord and earnestly prayed to show mercy on the living beings. Suddenly, it started raining heavily and the entire area was flood with water. Arulalar found a bowl full of rice floating on the water and a mysterious voice followed that this Akshya Patra would satiate the hunger of people.





This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning and 4.00 PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
