Skandha Shashti Vizha begins on 24th October, 2014 !!

Skandha Shasti begins on the
6th day of bright fornight in the Tamil Month Aippasi. The six
day long festival commemorates the fierce battle of Lord Muruga with
the demon Tharakasura and the death of the demon.
The celebration continues for
six days in all the Murugan temples especially in the famous Six Abodes of Lord
Muruga. The Six Abodes of Lord Muruga are Thirupparamkundram,
Thiruchendur, Palani, Swami Malai, Thiruthani and Pazhamuthir Cholai.
Fasting, following austerities on these auspicious days and reciting the scared
hymns of Lord Muruga such as Thirupukazh and Skandha Puranam are highly
meritorious.

The great epic/Ithihas Srimad
Ramayana was written by Maharishi Valmiki, it contains 24000 verses into 7
cantos, such as Bala Kandam, Ayodhya Kandam, Aranya Kandam, Kishkindha Kandam,
Sundarakandam, Yuddha Kandam and Uthara Kandam.
The Uthara Kandam describes the early life of Sage Valmiki as a mugger
Ratnakar, who plunders the travelers in woodlands and takes away their life.
Once, Ratnakar happened to encounter Sage Narada. The compassionate Sage enquired Ratnakar
whether his family would carry the burden of the sin he has committed by looting
the people and killing mercilessly. He
assured the sage that his family would be ready to share the sin he has
committed. But, Sage Narada insisted him
to confirm the same with his family.
Soon, Ratnakar returned in utter desolation with a negative response, he
realized the truth of life, further he begged for forgiveness to Sage
Narada. The compassionate Sage advised
Ratnakar, a sacred hymn to get rid of the sins and attain salvation. It was ‘Mara’, a phonetic anagram of the sacred chant ‘Rama’,
Ratnakar underwent severe austerities and immersed in the recitation of sacred
hymn for many years, eventually an ant-hill mounted on his body. Ultimately a mysterious voice declared that
his penance was fruitful and bestowed him the name ‘Valmiki’.
Once, Sage Valmiki with his
disciple Bharadhwaja went to River Ganga for ablution. On their way, they took a halt on the river
bank of Thamasa, Sage Valmiki witnessed two Krauncha birds in a pleasing mood,
as he was watching over them suddenly an arrow hit the male Krauncha bird and
it died instantly. The lady Krauncha
bird shrieked in extreme agony and that too died. Sage Valmiki turned inconsolable after
witnessing the pitiable sight. His eyes
searched for the hunter and cried out in anger by uttering the following verse:
Ma Nishadha Prathishtam
Thvamagama: Shashvathi: Sama: |
Yath Krauncha Mithunadhekam
Avadhi: Kama Mohitham ||
Later, Maharishi Valmiki composed
the great epic Srimad Ramayan contains 24,000 verses in 7 cantos with the
blessings of Lord Brahma, which is famously known as Ithihasa that describes
the life of Rama, seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Sharadha Navaratri/Maha Navaratri
begins on Shukla Paksha Prathama day in Dakshinayana Punykalam. It is believed
that the worship of Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi and follow strict austerities on
these propitious nine days would get rid of impurities and the demonic traits
such as Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Madha, Moha, Ascharya, Paishunya, Asuya etc... in
the worshipper. Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi, Mother of the Universe
is the personification of Goddess Sri Durga Parameshwari, Goddess Sri
Mahalakshmi and Goddess Sri Mahaswaraswathi who differentiates with three Gunas
such as Thamo Guna, Rajo Guna and Satvic Guna respectively. The various form of Goddess Sri Durga is famously
known as Nava Durgas, such as Vanadurga, Shoolini Durga, Jathavetho Durga,
Jwala Durga, Shanthi Durga, Sabari Durga, Dvipa Durga, Suri Durga, and Lavana
Durga. In the same manner, Goddess Sri
Mahalakshmi has various forms known as Ashtalakshmi such as Adi Mahalakshmi,
Dhana Lakshmi, Santhana Lakshmi , Dhairya Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi,
Veeralakshmi, Vijayakshmi and Gajalakshmi.
Goddess Sri Saraswathi has eight forms such as Goddess Sri Vageeswari,
Goddess Sri Chithreshwari, Goddess Sri Tuljadevi, Goddess Sri Theertheshwari,
Anthariksha Saraswathi and Neela Saraswathi.
Worship of Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi on these auspicious days in her
majestic forms such as Iccha Shakthi, Gnana Shakthi and Kriya Shakthi would
bring abundance of devoutness. In the
first three days, Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Durga
Parameshwari / Icchashakthi who provides perpetual mental strength, valor and
triumph in all endeavors and the next three days, Goddess Sri Adishakthi is
worshipped as Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi/Kriyashakthi, provider of affluence and
the last three days Goddess Sri Adishakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri
Mahasaraswathi/Gnana Shakthi, bestows eternal wisdom and knowledge, proficiency
in all art forms and ultimately self-realization and God-realization to attain
salvation. Worship of Sapthamathas Brahmi, Maheshwari,Chamundi,
Kaumari,Vaishnavi, Varahi, and Mahendri on these brings abundance of pieties.
On the first day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adishakthi is venerated as Goddess Sri Chamundi/Chamunda, slayer of
the demon Mundasura. She carries Musalam,
Kavacham, Banam, Ankusham, Khadgam, Khedakam, Dhanus, Dhandam, Parasu in her
hands and the other two hands are in Abhyahastha and Varadhahastha posture. She is attired in tiger skin, seated on
lotus, wearing garlands of skulls. She
has dreadful appearances and resides under fig tree.
On the second day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adishakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Varahi, female force of
Lord Vishnu. She has assisted Goddess
Sri Adishakthi in the battle against the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha,
therefore she is considered as the chief commandant of the warriors of Goddess
Sri Adishakthi. She has various names like Goddess Sri
Mangalamaya Narayani, Goddess Sri Dhandini, Goddess Sri Bagalamukhi, Panchami
etc.. She has the face of Varaha/boar,
dark complexioned, seated on a lotus and wields Hala and Trident, she resides
under Kalpakavruksha.
On the third day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adishakthi is venerated as Goddess Sri Indrani/ Samrajyadhayini/ Mahendhri
female force of Lord Indra and slayer of the demon Vruthasura. She is the Empress of Devaloka, red
complexioned, she has elephant as her celestial vehicle and carries the weapon
Vajrayudha and Ankusha in both the hands, and the other two hands are in Abhaya
Hastha and Varadha Hastha posture. She
resides under the wish fulfilling Kalpavruksha.
On the fourth day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adishakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Vaishnavi, female force of
Lord Vishnu and she has the celestial vehicle Garuda. Goddess Sri Vaishnavi carries conch, dice,
goad and lotus on four hands; the other two hands are in Abhaya hastha and
Varadha Hastha posture. She is attired
in yellow garments, adorned magnificent jewels on her body and resides under
the Rajavruksha.
On the fifth day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adishakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Maheshwari, female force of
Lord Maheshwara and she has the celestial vehicle Rishabha. She is white complexioned, carries trident
and Japamala on both the hands and the other two hands in Abhayahastha and
Varadahastha posture.
On the sixth day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adishakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Kaumari/Kumari, female
force of Lord Devasenapathi, she resides under fig tree and has the celestial
vehicle peacock and a flag carries the symbol of hen. The yellow complexioned Goddess Sri Kaumari
carries Kukkutam and trident in two hands and the other two hands are in
Abhayahastha and Varadahastha posture.
On the seventh day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, consort of
Lord Vishnu.
On the eighth day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Nrusimhi /Narasimhi, female
force of Lord Vishnu.
On the ninth day of Navaratri,
Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi is worshipped as Goddess Sri Brahmi/Bhramini, female
force of Lord Brahma. Goddess Sri Brahmi
is four faced, seated on a red lotus, attired in Yellow cloth. Sri Brahmi
carries Trident and beads/Japamala in both the hands; the other two hands are in
Abhayahastha and Varadhahastha posture.
Her celestial vehicle is swan and resides under the Palasa Vruksham.
