There was a Brahmin named Sumitra and his wife Jayashri lived in the city.  In all their life, Jayashri did not observe any of the rules prescribed or strictness should be observed during the time of menstruation.  (During these days, women have usually engrossed with the negative aura of Chandalini, Brahmadatini and washer women on these three consecutive days.  On the fourth day, after bath she is treated as purified.)  Jayashri used to cook food like any other normal days during these days of impurities and partaken food with her husband. In this manner they continued to live their life without following any austerities.   Years passed Sumitra had diminished his brilliance, intelligence and sharpness of mind etc…  Hence it is resulted in leading a dull life without any self-realization or God-realization.  The couple passed away as they grew older.

As a Brahmin it was the responsibility of Sumitra to learn scriptures and sacred Vedas, teachings of the same and follow a righteous life as mentioned in the sacred texts.  Unfortunately, the Brahmin couple failed to do so.  They took rebirth as flesh eating animals for their sins committed in their previous life.  This couple took rebirth as carnivores and continued to live in the surrounding places of their home where his son Sumati and his wife Chandravali lived.   (The above mentioned facts reveals how the Karma (Past deeds) follows the human life and shape their re -births)   The parents of Sumati had to undergo all kinds of malice and ill treatment from their own son and daughter-in-law.  One day, the two carnivores were communicating each other about their pitiable state.  (There was a time; human beings were able to converse with all their fellow beings whether it was an animal or tree).  They lamented at their fate and repented at their previous act.  They remorsefully stated that the sin committed in their previous life was the only cause for their sufferings; all their past deeds propelled them to face maltreatment from their own son and daughter-in-law.

Incidentally, Chandravali happened to overhear the distressed state of her parents in law and their conversation.  She immediately informed her husband about the wretched state of his parents.  Sumati was utterly traumatized at this and decided to find a solution for this serious issue. Sumati met Sage Sarvatapa and who was a Trikalajyani (one who knows the Past, Present and Future) from his invaluable advices Sumati understood the sins committed by his parents.  Sage Sarvatapa advised Sumati to follow strict austerities and fasting on the day of Rishi Panchami, perform rituals for forefathers, worship Sapatha Rishis with Arundati etc.. It would release his parents from the hellish torture.  Sumati and Chandravali faithfully observed Rishi Panchami fast, followed austerities, performed rituals and donated alms to Brahmin.  Thus, Sumati saved his parents from their carnivores’ life and they attained the highest of the piety - ‘Salvation’.

Sri Varaha Jayanti on 31st August, 2011 !! (26th August as per Tamil Calendar) !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Lord Prithvi’s inquisitiveness had no bounds.  She quizzically approached Lord Varaha to explain further about the details of Creation.

Lord Varaha continued, at the end of each Kalpa the deluge (pralaya) takes place.  The whole Universe submerges into darkness and flooded with water. The Supreme Lord Vishnu undergoes cosmic sleep.  When He wakes up from His cosmic sleep realizes that the space is empty without any living beings.  Once again the Supreme Lord starts the creation.  The term Narayana denotes ‘Nara’ (Water)+’Ayanam’ (Seat), one who resides in water.  All the false knowledge such as Tamassic qualities (Darkness), attachments (Moha), Absolute illusion (Mahamoha), Jealousy (Tamisra), Anger (Andha Tamisra) came into existence followed by the immovable things like trees and mountains came to known as main creations.

In the beginning, Rudra and Lord Brahma’s Manasaputras – Sanaka, Sanath Kumara, Sanandha and Sanath Sujatha  were manifested subsequently Marichi, Angira, Atri, Pulaha, Pulastya, Kratu, Pracheta, Bhrigu, Narada and Vashishta came into existence.

Lord Brahma’s first creation was Lord Rudra in Ardhanareeshwara (half male and half female form).  Lord Brahma prayed to Lord Rudra to reveal His two different forms as male and female.  The ten Rudras manifested from the male form collectively known as Eleven Rudras.

Lord Brahma continued his creations – the creation of different species of animals known as ‘Tiryaksrota’.  Lord Brahma created all the deities in Swatic Sarga. He created human beings with all three gunas namely Rajass – with the predominance of anger and arrogance which results in endless sorrows, Tamas with ignorance and laziness results in sorrow and Swatik with pure thoughts which provides eternal bliss in Arvaksrota Sarga.  In Anugraha Sarga Lord Brahma created Rishis and Sages – The enlightened ones for bringing righteousness in the Universe.  The Ninth Sarga , Lord Brahma created ‘Kumaras’ (Youths) which was  known as Kaumara Sarga .

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

The most pleased Supreme Lord continued to narrate to Lord Prithvi for her all queries.  At the beginning of the creation there was only five basic elements (Pancha Boothas) were manifested from the Supreme Lord.  The five elements where:
·        Space
·        Earth
·        Water
·        Air
·        Fire

Subsequently, the great elements, nature and collective consciousness appeared themselves.   As a next process the collective consciousness become one with the three qualities – Rajass, Tamas and Swatik in three different  state.   The Rajasic qualities reveal the existence of arrogance and pride, Tamasic reveals the ignorance and lazyness and Swatik is the superior qualities among them known that ‘Enlightened ones’.  The combinations of these are known as ‘Prakriti’, the ‘Indriyas’ (Sense organs) are derived out of the subtle form of matters.  The soul is treated as ‘Eternal’ and superior than anything else.   Supreme Lord created all the living beings with the help of five basic elements.

The above was the explanation of Lord Varaha to Lord Prithvi, as an answer for her first query.

Lord Varaha continues, in the beginning there was nothing but an empty space predominated.   Later the sound, ether, air, light and water came into existence. The, Lord created the Earth as a base for all the living entities.  Out of the combinations of Earth and water, there appeared an Egg.  The Egg started grew big in size; there appeared the Supreme Lord Sriman Narayana.  At the beginning of an each Kalpa a Lotus emerge out of the navel of Sriman Narayana, as a settling place for Lord Brahma.  Lord Brahmas was entrusted with the responsibility of ‘Creation’. Though Brahma was assigned with the task of creation, He was not so successful at it.  Inspite of all the efforts, the task became incomple which brought fury in him.    A divine child was manifested from the fury of Lord Brahma – He was none other than ‘Rudra’.

Lord Brahma created Prajapatis from his big toe of right leg and also created consort of Prajapatis from his big toe of left leg.  That was the beginning of creation; the Prajapatis had a son named Swayambuva Manu.  Thus, the creation of living beings continued on Earth in each Kalpa.  In due course of time the population has increased.

Varaha Puranam describes the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Varaha (Wild Boar) in order to save Earth (Bhumi Devi) from the clutches of the demon Hiranyaksha.  The mighty demon Hiranyaksha abducted Mother Earth and hidden in Rasathala (under the Ocean).   Thus, he put an end to Creation.  At the request of Lord Brahma, Lord Sriman Narayana took the form of a wild boar and plunged into the sea.  Lord Varaha had fierce battle with the demon and  saved Lord Prithvi from Rasathala.

Lord Prithvi had the following queries in her mind, she requests Lord Varaha to explain them in detail.

·        How does the ‘Creation’ process begin in each Kalpa?
·        What is deluge?
·        How do you preserve the creation?
·        In which order the Yuga begins and the calculation of the same?
·        What was the purpose of incarnation of Lord Vishnu in each Yugas?

Lord Prithvi requests Lord Varaha to enlighten her with the answers of the above queries.  After listening to Lord Prithvi, Lord Vishnu burst into laughter.   Lord Prithvi was perplexed at the sight in his wide opened mouth, the whole Universe, deities and the living beings were visible in there.  She bewildered at this sight and trembled with fear.  In order to eliminate the fear in Her, Lord Varaha transformed himself in to Lord Vishnu in His reclining posture with Sri Mahalakshmi in the Milky Ocean.    Lord Prithvi delighted at the divine appearance of Lord Varaha and praised the glory of him.

The mighty demon Hiranyakasha abducted Prithvi (Bhumi Devi) and hidden under the ocean (Rasathala).  Lord Brahma disappointed at this, it created havoc on his responsibility as a Creator.  Lord Brahma was under deep meditation, during this moment suddenly a thumb sized pig surged through his nostrils.  Surprisingly, the small sized creature rose up in the sky and turned out a wild boar.  At this incredible sight, Lord Brahma and his Manasa Purtas – Marichi, Sanakadis and Manus imagined differently about this peculiar creature.  Lord Brahma astounded at the sight of the wild board and wondered it might be the Lord Vishnu himself.  When all of them engrossed in their thoughts about the wild boar and it purpose, the boar – Lord Varaha roared.

The loud shout of the wild boar was encouraging and it was showing some positive signs which made Lord Brahma and Rishis happy. They understood the wild boar was none other than Lord Vishnu himself to eliminate their frustrations caused by the demon Hiranyakasha.  After listening to the constant roaring of the Lord Varaha, all the deities and Rishis eulogized Lord Varaha.

The Rishis and deities praised the glories of Lord Yajya Varaha in the above lines.  Lord Vishu – who is eulogized by Vedas appeared before them in order to re-establish righteousness on the land and abolish the dreadful condition of mother Earth in the clutches of demon Hiranyaksha .  The Shwetha Vahara with its grandiose, looked at Rishis and deities, holding its tail up, thick skin covered with small hairs on it, plunged into the ocean.  It moved deep into see, Varaha by using its sense organs started searching for Lord Prithvi.  The ocean waves and its roaring sounds were seemed like praying to Lord Varaha ‘ ‘Oh ! Lord, Save us’.

Lord Varaha entered the Rasathala and took Lord Prithvi with its sharp horns and elegantly raised her above the sea level.   The gracefulness of Lord Prithvi on the holds of Lord Varaha was described in a classy manner.  Abruptly, the mighty demon Hiranyaksha rushed from nowhere with his mace.  Lord Varaha attacked the demon, a fierce battle took place in between them and within few seconds he died. After slaughtering Hiranyaksha , Lord Varaha stood majestically with blood all over his face.
