One of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam Thiru Mahalingaswamy temple at Thiruvidaimaruthur as the main shrine of Lord Shiva surrounded by the temples of Lord Ganesha at Thiruvalanchuzhi, Lord Subramanya at Swamimalai, Lord Nandikeshwara at Thiruvaduthurai, Lord Chandikeshwara at Thirucheinnallur, Lord Nataraja at Chidambaram, Lord Thyagesaperuman at Thiruvanur, Lord Dakshinamurthi at Thiruirumpunnai, Lord Bhairava at Shirkazhi, Goddess Parvati at Thirukadaiyur, Lord Surya at Suryanar Kovil and Lord Shaneeswara at Thirunallar are collectively known as Parivara Kshetram.

Shiva Surya Narayana Kovil/Suryanar Kovil is one of the prominent temples of Lord Surya located in Thirumangalakkudi, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the famous temple dedicated to  Lord Surya was  built by the King Kulothunga Chola.

The legend has that Sage Kanva as a Trikala Gnani could foresee his future.  He was horrified to know that before long he would be afflicted with leprosy.  Sage Kanva earnestly prayed to the Navagrahas who had the foremost influence on the destiny of one’s life and underwent severe austerities.  Navagrahs were pleased at the devotion of Sage Kanva and protected from the happening of the terrible illness.  Hence, Sage Kanva was liberated from the menace and reshaped his destiny.  Lord Brahma was came to know about the boon provided by the Navagrahas and cursed them.  Soon, Navagrahas were afflicted with leprosy; they approached Lord Brahma and pleaded for forgiveness.  Lord Brahma advised the nine planets to undergo austerities and worship Lord Prananatheswara and his consort Goddess Sri Mangalambika at Thirumangalakkudi that would eradicate the sin committed.  Navagrahas were underwent severe austerities on this sacred land and got rid of the curse,   a beautiful temple was raised on its place for the worship widely known as Suryanar Kovil.
 


This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 7.30 PM in the evenings.

Thirunallar/Navagra Kshetram /Saptha Vidanga Kshetram/Darbaranyam/Nakavidangapuram/Nalechuram/  is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam located in between Arasilaru & Vanchanadhi in Karaikkal, Puducherry District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the prominent temples of Lord Shiva built by the Kings of Chola Dynasty; it occupies huge acres of land famous for its stunning architectural and murals, also known as Navagra Kshetram famous for the worship of Lord Shaneeswara (Saturn).  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

There was a time the Kingdom of Pandya was under the evil influence of Jainism.  The King Koonpandya who was a firm follower of Jainism, thus the entire Kingdom was under the clutches of Jain principles of Philosophies.  Once, Thiru Gnana Sambandhar was invited to Madurai to be present at the debate with the Jains, in order to prove the superiority of Shaiva Sidhhantha.   In this huge dispute the Jains were made an effort to prove their superiority by hurling the palm leaves contains the principles and philosophies of Jainism to the blaze, instantly those were burnt into ashes.  Sambandhar tossed the scripts praising the glories of ‘Pokamarnthapoonmulaiyal’ (Presiding deity of Thirunallar) into the blaze, surprisingly the palm leaves remained untouched.   Thus, Sambandhar proved the grandeur of Shaiva Siddhantha and reinstated the faith of Lord Shiva in Madurai

The legend has that Emperor Nala had to undergo relentless hardships due to the adverse effects of Lord Shaneeswara, eventually he lost his Kingdom, glories and family.  He arrived on this sacred land; had holy dip in the pond created by him and worshipped Lord Dharbaranyeswara.  Finally King Nala regained his lost glories with the blessings of Lord.






Another legend has that the Emperor Muchukunda underwent austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Emperor and instructed to collect an exceptional idol of Lord Shiva & Goddess Sri Parvati along with Lord Subramanya which was worshipped by Lord Vishnu, later it was given to Lord Indra.   Emperor Muchukunda approached Lord Indra and earnestly prayed for the idol.    Lord Indra was not willing to give away the idol of Lord Somaskandha received from Lord Vishnu.  He instructed the Emperor to construct six sacred shrines; it was dutifully followed by him.  Later, the original idol of Lord Somaskandha was provided to him.   The temples built by Emperor Muchukunda were collectively known as Saptha Vidanga Kshetram.  They are Thirunallar, Thiruvaimur, Thirumaraikkadu, Thirukkolili, Thirukkaravasal, Thirunagai Karonam and Thiruvarur.  Thiruvarur was the place where the original image of Lord Somaskanda worshipped by Lord Vishnu was installed.

Thirukadaiyur/Thirukkadavoor/ Pancha Mayana Kshetram/Thirumeignanam/Parivara Kshetram  is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu.  The Mayana Kshetrams are the sacred places of Lord Shiva where Lord Brahma was burnt to ashes.  The five Mayana Kshetrams are Kasi Mayanam/Varanasi, Kacchi Mayanam/Kanchipuram, Kazhi Mayanam/ Shirkazhi, Nallur Mayanam/Thirunallar and Kadavur Mayanam/Thirukadaiyur.  The temple inscription reveals the contributions made by the Kings of Chozha and Pandya.

The sacred bath for Lord Brahmapureeswarar has performed with Brahma Theertham (Ganga) only.  Once King Bahuleya wanted to experiment this by pouring water brought from Varanasi, it caused a crack on the top of the Linga and it’s still visible on the deity.

After attaining the boon of immortality, Sage Markandeya underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva on this sacred land.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Sage Markandeya and brought the holy river Ganga on a Panguni – Aswini to continue the veneration without any impediments.

This is one of the prominent places of Lord Shiva where Lord Brahma was burnt into ashes. All the deities arrived on this sacred land; they underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva. They all appealed to Lord Shiva to restore Lord Brahma’s life so as to reinstate the function of Trinities. Lord Shiva was pleased at the devotion of the deities and brought back Lord Brahma into life. Moreover, the most compassionate Lord provided eternal wisdom and knowledge to Lord Brahma.

Sri Brahmapureeswarar Temple is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Shirkazhi, which is 17kms away from Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples built during the regime of Chola dynasty.  The Emperor Vira Rajendrachola and the Kings of Vijayanagara also have made abundance of contribution to this temple.  This temple occupies vast acres of land and it has majestic Rajagopuram, grand mandapam and wide circumambulatory paths.   This temple enshrines Lord Brahmapureeswar worshipped by Lord Brahma, Sri Thoniappar and Sri Sattainathar within the precincts.

Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva in this sacred land and started creation of living beings on Earth after deluge.  Hence the presiding deity has got his name ‘Brahmapureeswarar’.



Significance – In this temple Goddess Sri Thirunilai Nayaki blessed three year old Thiru Gana Sambandhar with her milk of wisdom.  Instantaneously, the divine child started to sing praising the glories of Lord Shiva and became one of the prominent Shivaite Saints known to the world.

The legend has that during the time of deluge the whole universe was about to submerge into water, Lord Shiva meticulously carried the sacred 64 art forms in a boat  and arrived on this sacred land.  As a result these 64 art forms remained intact throughout the deluge without any damage.

Thirucheinnallur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thiruvidaimaruthur, Thanjanvur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the prominent Madakkovil built by King Ko-Chengan Choza.   In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

Lord Subramanya left Mount Kailash to vanquish the demon Shoorapadhman, on his way to Veeramahendirapuram arrived on this sacred land and worshipped Lord Sakthigireeswarar.   Hence, this place has got its name Thirucheinnallur. 


This is the birth blace of Thiru Chandesanayanar :



This is the birth place of Thiru Periyavacchanpillai who wrote commentaries on Nalayira Divyaprabhandham.

Thiruirumpoolai/Alangudi/Navagraha Keshtram/Pancharanya Kshetram/Guru Peedam/Parivara Kshetram is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in  Thiruvanur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one prominent temples of Lord Dakshinamurthi famously known as Gurusthalam.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of self-manifested Linga.

Significance:

Alangudi  is one of the nine Parivara Kshetram of Lord Mahalingaswamy at Thiruvidaimaruthur widely known as Gurusthalam/ Lord Dakshinamurthi, others are Lord Ganesha at Thiruvalamchuzhi, Lord Subramanya at Swamimalai, Lord Nandikeshwara at Thiruvavaduthurai,  Navagrahas at Suryanarkovil, Lord Chandeswara at Thiruvaipadi, Lord Nataraja at Chidambaram, Lord Bhairava at Sheerkazhi and  Lord Somaskandhar at Thiruvanur. 

 
Alangudi/Thiruirumpoolai/Punnaivanam  is one of the Pancharanya Kshetram was eulogized by the deities and the others are Thirukkarukavur/Mullaivanam, Avanivanallur/Pathiri Vanam, Aranthaiperumpazhi/Haridwaramangalam and Thirukkolamputhur/Vilvavanam.
 
 
The legend has that Emperor Muchukundha’ Minister Amuthokar was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.  Emperor demanded for the pieties he had obtained through the virtuous deeds should be transferred to him.  Consequently, Emperor beheaded his Minister Amuthokar, instantaneously a mystifying echo pronounce the name of his minister on this sacred land.  The Emperor was baffled at this incident, regretted for the offense committed. He underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Apathsahayeswarar and eventually got rid of the sin.
