Skandha Puranam - The Birth of Lord Subramanya !!

Jai Sriman Naryana !!

Muruga Saranam !!

Skandha Puranam describes the birth and glories of Lord Skandha/Lord Subramanya also known as Kaliyuga Vardhan /Arumughan - Six faced Lord.  His six faces represent the six divine aspects of Beauty, Valor, Love, Knowledge, Youth and Happiness.

Six powerful rays emanated from the third eye of Lord Shiva after listening to Lord Brahma regarding the atrocities of the Demons.  Lord Vayu (The Wind God) carried them and safely deposited to the holy River Ganga.  Soon after, River Ganga securely set down the most powerful rays into Saravana Poikai where the six sparks transformed into six beautiful babies. Six Karthikai women nursed the babies with greatest affection.  When Goddess Uma arrived at Saravana Poikai she was overwhelmed at the splendor of six babies seated on six lotuses, she rushed off her feet and embraced the babies altogether.  Instantly, all the six babies turned into one with six faces.

The most significant event took place when Maharishi Narada arrived at Mount Kailash with a Mango – An elixir of Knoweldge & wisdom.  The divine couple was astounded at the advice of Maharishi Narada, the divine Mango should be eaten wholly to obtain its merit.  The divine couple put forward a condition before their loveliest children Lord Ganesha and Lord Subramanya.  The condition was whoever comes first after circumambulating (Parikrama) the Universe for three times would be benefitted with the unique elixir of Wisdom.   Lord Subramanya set off on his celestial vehicle - peacock and Lord Ganesha remained helpless with his pot sized belly.  Soon Lord Ganesha circumambulated His divine parents for three times to revive the prime truth ‘Father and Mother constitute the Universe’ and won the blissful Mango.

Lord Subramanya arrived at Mount Kailash after the Parikrama of Universe and found that the Mango was already possessed by his brother Lord Ganesha.  It mounted his anger; he immediately left Mount Kailash with all the commotions.  Though his parents were followed him with boundless compassion, it all ended in vain.  When Lord Subramanya embarked his journey from Mount Kailash, he passed through the southwards; he put a break of his journey in six places which turned out Six Holy Abodes of Lord Subramanya.  The six holy Abodes are Thiruthani, Swamimalai, Thiru Avinankudi, Pazhamudhircholai, Thirupparamkundram and Thiruchendur.  While his journey he had ferocious battle against the demons.  Lord Indra was pleased at the valor of Lord Subramanya and offered his daughter Deivayani. Thiruchender was one of the glorious abodes where Lord Subramanya married to Goddess Deivayani.

Lord Subramanya preceded his journey towards Sri Lanka and settled in Kathirkamam.  Later, he married to Goddess Valli – A tribal girl and daughter of Nambirajan, the chief of the Tribe.  Goddess Deivayani symbolizes the energy of Action, Goddess Valli represents the energy of Desire and the Spear denotes energy of Knowledge, thus they are phrased as Kriya Sakthi, Iccha Sakthi and Gnana Sakthi.

Skanda Puranam describes the celestial marriage of Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati and the Birth of Lord Karthikeya.  Thai Poosam commemorates the day Lord Karthikeya beheaded the demon Tharakasura .   It is widely celebrated in all the Murugan Temples in India and abroad as well.

Maheshwara Kandam describes Goddess Sati sacrificed her life in the sacrificial fire of Yagna conducted by her father Dakshaprajapathi.  The sudden demise of Goddess Sati brought Lord Shiva in an appalling state.  Lord Shiva lost interest in everything and led a horrendous life.  Lord Shiva's absence in performance of his responsibilities as destroyer of sins caused accumulation of sins in the Universe.  The demon Tharakasura got boon from Lord Brahma, that no one in the Universe could kill him other than a child.  After obtaining extra-ordinary boons, Tharakasura started harassing the deities.  All the deities were well aware of the fact that only Lord Shiva's son could get rid of the demon Tharakasura.  Lord Shiva was leading an austere life and engaged in severe penance out of grief.  All the deities were engaged in persuading Lord Shiva to marry and give birth to a child who could kill the demon Tharakasura.  The deities entrusted the responsibility to interrupt the severe penance of Lord Shiva to Lord Kamadeva.  The end result was Kamadeva burned into ashes; it made his wife Rathi fallen into extreme state of grief.  Goddess Parvati (Girija/ an incarnation of Sati) assured Rathi that she would bring Kamadeva back to her life once again.  Finally, Goddess Parvati with her firm devotion and severe penance got married to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the happily married celestial couple lived in Gandhamana Parvatham. In due course of time Lord Karthikeya's birth took place.  All the deities were happy at the turn of the events that a child has arrived to take away the life of the demon Tharakasura.  Lord Karthikeya with the army of deities entered the battlefield to fight against the demon Tharakasura.  The Great War took place between Tharakasura and Lord Karthikeya in the islands amid the River Ganga and Yamuna.  During the war, Tharakasura attacked Lord Indra and he was badly hurt.  King Muchukunda confronted Tharakasura, unfortunately he could not withstand the demon and seriously wounded.  Sage Narada advised the deities that demon that has already possessed all the 'Ashta Sidhis' (Anima, mahima, garima, laghima etc...) only Lord Karthikeya could fight against him.  Veerabhadra already made damages to the warriors of demons; Tharakasura started using illusionary powers against the deities.  The ferocious battle between the Deities and demons continued, Lord Vishnu instructed Lord Karthikeya to use the weapon provided by his parents,  Tharakasura  was killed at the fierce battle.  The deities were delighted at the Victory over the demon Tharakasura.  Eventually, Lord Karthikeya's marriage with Devasena, Daughter of Indra took place.

Skanda Puranam - City of Ujjain !! Kanjan Shringa/Kushastali/Avanti/Ujjain/Padmavati !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Skanda Puranam describes the city of Ujjain.  In ancient times, Ujjain known by various names Avanti, Kushasthali, Kanjan Shringa and Padmavati.

Sage Sanathkumar explains to Maharishi Veda Vyasa, once Lord Vishnu disappeared from his Abode.  Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma together went in search for Lord Vishnu and arrived at Kushasthali.  Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva found the presence of Lord Vishnu in the magnificent place called Kushasthali.  Further, the deities (Lord Brahma  and Lord Shiva) requested Lord Vishnu to provide them a place to settle down in the beautiful city of Ujjain and revealed that they can not leave Lord Vishnu separately.

After hearing the intention of the deities, Lord Vishnu requested Lord Brahma to settle down on the northen parts of the beautiful city of Ujjain, while Lord Shiva on the southern part of the Ujjain as His Abode. The deities referred the place Ujjain as city of golden mountins, that is how it has got the another name 'Kanjan Shringa'.

Lord Brahma started His duty of creation and requested Lord Vishnu to nurture it.  Lord Vishnu asked for a pious place on the Earth where He could settle down and perform His duty.  Lord Brahma picked up some Kusha (Dhrba) grass and thrown to a place, where Lord Vishnu settled on the Kusha Grass started to perform his responsibility as 'Preserver'.  This is the very reason, Ujjain got another name 'Kushasthali'.

The deities were defeated by demons and went to hide in Meru Mountain.  The deities sought the help of Lord Brahma who took them to Lord Vishnu.  All the deities paid obeisance to Lord Vishnu and an invisible voice declared that there is a scarosanct place  called Mahakal in the Kushathali.  Lord Mahadeva dwells in this place.  The  unknown voice instructed the deities should undergo penance on this scaroscant place, which could bring back the Heavenly abode to them.  The deities underwent severe penance in a place called Paishachamochan in Kushasthali.  Finally, as prophezied the deities once again regained their heavenly abode.  The term 'Avan' denote 'The Protector', once the deities choose this place to protect themselves from the demons.   Later,  this place came to know ' Avanti Puri'.

There was a demon called Tripurasura did an austere penance and  Lord Brahma pleased at his austerity.  Who got the boon - immortality from Lord Brahma.  Immediately after  receiving the boon with the immense power he started harrasing all the deities.  The deities approached Lord Shiva and sought for help.  Lord Shiva assured them that He would kill the Tripurasura and his days are counted.  As predicted by Lord Shiva had a fierce battle with Tripurasura, in the battle field Lord Shiva killed the demon with His 'Pashupat Astra'.  The place where the fierce battle took place between Lord Shiva and Tripurasura is known as 'Ujjain'.

While churning the Milky ocean for Ambrosia (The divine nectar) of Immortal, many precious things came out including the Halahala Poison.  When the divine nectar came out, there was a huge quarrel and havoc between deities and demons claiming for the nectar.  Sage Narada instructed Lord Vishnu to do something to bring peace within them.  Lord Vishnu took a form of an beautiful lady (Mohini) and came out to serve the Ambrosia of immortality.  The demons preferred the intoxicated drinks and infatuated at the beauty of the Mohini.  Lord Vishnu served the deities with the Ambrosia of Immortality.  Rahu presents himself diguised among the deities.  When Lord Vishnu came to know about this, Lord Vishnu got hold of his throat hardly he could gulp down and severed his head.  These incidents were taken place in the forest of Mahakal.  The deities entitled to get equally  all the precious things emerged out of the churning of Milky ocen.  Goddess Lakshmi also got another name Padmavati.  This is also one of the reason Ujjain has got the name 'Padmavati'.

Lord Shiva narrates to Goddess Parvathi about His eternal abode on the Earth, situated in the vast land of Prabhasa Theertham on the Western Coast.  This entire land is spread out the brilliance of Lord Surya comparatively for longer hours, thus it was known as 'Prabhas' / Luster, and this is also the foremost reason for the existence of Lord Surya Narayana Temple on this sacred land.  Very close to this Temple of Lord Suryanaraya, situated a magnificent temple of Lord Sidhheshwar, which was known as Jaigishavyeshwar in olden days.  Lord Shiva explains the myth of the existence of Lord Siddhheshwar to Goddess Parvati. There was a sage Jaigishavya, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva who used to worship Lord Mahoday, a self-manifested Linga.  He was leading an extremely austere life, remembering the fondness of ashes of Lord Shiva; he smeared the Linga with the ashes and slept on the ashes.  The most pleased Lord Mahoday blessed the sage with immortality and he would be a known as 'Yogacharya' /Teacher of Yoga.   Lord Mahoday worshipped by Yogacharya would be capable to remove all the sins committed.   At the begining of the Kali era, the 'Balkhilyas' the sages /Lord Brahmas Putras arrived to worship Lord Mahoday worshipped were attained Salvation.  The self manifested Linga  of Lord Mahoday is also known as Sidheshwar Linga  which is capable to fulfill  the desires of the worshipper.

There are many pilgrim places situated in the vicinity of Siddha Linga Kshetram.  It is believed that, whoever worships Siddhalinga on the Trayodhashi day of bright half of the month Chaithra attains virtues similar to Pundareeka Yagna.

Skanda Puranam - Dwaraka Mahathmyam !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Skanda Puranam describes the Dwaraka Mahathmyam.  Once, the Sages went to meet Lord Brahma in Sathya Loka with an serious issue of 'How to realize Lord Vishnu at the dark era of Kali?'. Lord Brahma advised them to meet  Prahlada - the supreme devotee of Sri Hari who lives in  Patal Loka.  They also met the Emperor Mahabali (grandson of Prahlada).  The sages where the most distressed of the Kali era.  The sages in great anguish revealed their issues as follows: the Brahmins are not interested in Vedas, there is  no respect and moral values in this Kali era, Brahmins are tormented by  Shudras .

Prahalada who is an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu,  well understood the desperation of a true devotee.  He explained Kushthali Puri which is situated on the western coast, nearby the river Gomati meets the ocean. At this convergent point is  situated the most sacrosanct city - Dwaraka Puri - where Lord Vishnu  chose it as His Abode, dwells in the most glorious form   "Chathurbujam".   There is a  Temple of Lord Trivikrama at the banks of river Gomati which is capable to wash off all the sins.  Lord Krishna, before leaving this world, transmitted all His divine powers and glories to this very Idol of Lord Trivikrama.  Anyone, who is desirous to have the divine glimpses of Lord Krishna must visit this sacred city of Dwaraka.

Prahalada continued, the mere thought or resolution to visit this sacred place itself provides the merit of liberating one's ancestors from the tortures of hell.  Each step of a devotee towards Dwaraka provides the virtues similiar of performing an Ashwamedha Yagam.  One who encourages to visit this holy place definitely acquires the merit of Vishnu Dham.

Skanda Puranam - Kashi - The Sacrosanct place of Pilgrimage !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Skanda Puranam describes the Majesty of Kashi - Varanasi.

Sage Agastya and his wife Lopamudra arrived at the mountains of Sri Sailam.  The Sage  explained that the mere sight of the peak of mountains brings salvation.  The Sage continued, "Prayag is one among the sacred places which could bring liberations from the cycles of birth and death".  It is capable to provide all the four Purusharthas - Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha.  There are many sacrosanct places which can bring salvation - Naimisharanya, Kurushetra, Gangadhwar, Avanti, Ayodhya, Dwaraka, Purushothama Kshetra, Badrikashram .  Amongst them, Kashi is incomparable.

Sage Agastya and Lopamudra circumambulated the mountain of Sri Sailam and moved on.  They met Lord Karthikeya and praised His glory by chanting Vedic Hymns.  The most pleased Karthikeya explained the majesty of Kashi.  Shambu Kumara revealed the truth that he Himself did not have the luck of visiting Kashi though he was capable to move on into the entire Universe at his own will.   Lord Karthikeya disclosed the eternal truth that no one can reach Kashi on their own will, though they underwent severe austerities.  Lord Mahadeva's blessings can only make it possible to visit this sacred place.  Only the fortunate can reside in Kashi till the end of their life.  Lord Karthikeya approached Sage Agastya, praising that the sage was fortunate to reside in the soils of Kashi.  He touched the body part of Sage Agastya as if touching the Sacred Soil of Kashi.

Sage Agastya requested Lord Karthikeya to explain the origin of the Sacrosanct Place  Kashi and how it  was capable to bring salvation to mankind.  Karthikeya revealed the fact that Goddess Parvati also had the same question in her mind, which was clarified by Lord Shiva.

During the time of Pralaya ( when the whole universe submerged into water), darkness existed everywhere and ' Brahmam ' took its own shape.  Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathy and Kashi generated in the 'Prakriti' from the Grace of  'Adi Purusha'.  Lord Karthikeya continued, even during the time of deluge, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati did not leave this sacred land and it is one of the sacred lands dear to Lord Shiva known as 'Anand Van' (place of immense joy).    Manifestation of Lord Purushothama from the equal entity of Lord Shiva, his consort and Lord Vishnu created the ' Chakra Theertham' from his own sweat and underwent severe penance. Lord Shiva blessed Purushothama and declared the place 'Manikarnika', the place where His diamond ear ring  got lost.  Lord Shiva dwells in this scared land with His eternal presence and this place is capable to provide 'Salvation' to mankind.  Lord Shiva assured Lord Vishnu that the eternal truth of one who remembers the 'Sacred name of this land - 'Kashi' is capable to wash off their sins, whoever resides in this land, though they happened to be a sinner.

The magnificent Linga in Kashi is known as one of the Jyothir Lingas.

Naagar Kandam describes King Thrisangu was afflicted with a curse by son of Sage Vashista

There was a righteous King Thrisangu in Surya Dynasty.  He had a yearning to set off to heaven with his mortal body.  He approached Sage Vashishta and respectfully requested any Yagnya he had to perform that would help him take his physical form to heaven. Sage Vashista laughed at the foolishness of the King.  The King Thrisangu was not satisfied with the response of Sage Vashishta, so he approached Sage’s son. Sage Vashishta's son was infuriated at the act of disregard towards his father and cursed the King to born as a 'Chandala'.   The King  Thrisangu was ashamed of his ignorance, left the throne to his son Harishchandra and procced to forest.

The chandala wandered through the woodlands aimlessly and finally met Sage Vishwamithra.  Chandala explained about his wretched life to Sage.  Sage Vishwamitra had always been an opponent of Sage Vashishta and wanted to prove his supremacy on him.   Sage Vishwamitra was determined to grant the desire of the Chandala.  Sage Vishwamitra decided to perform an Yagna. The Chandala and the Sage set out for Pilgrim places to take holy dip in theerthas to get rid of the form of Chandala.  On their way, they met Sage Markandeya at Arbudhanchal.  Sage Vishwamitra desperately explained the pathetic story of King Thrisangu and his desire to Sage Markandeya,  also mentioned the vow he had taken to send the King with his mortal body to Heaven. Sage Markandeya advised Sage Vishwamitra to go to Haatkeshwar to take a holy dip in 'Patal Ganga'.   Immediately after the holy dip in Patal Ganga King Thrisangu transformed into his normal form, it added surprises to Sage Vishwamitra.    Sage Vishwamitra wanted Lord Brahma should be present while the Yagna takes place,   so he went to Sathya Loka   and explained to Lord Brahma about his desire and preparations to send the King Thrisangu to Heaven with his mortal body.  Lord Brahma advised Sage Vishwamitra about the fruitlessness of their task, instead he could attain heaven after his death with all the righteousness.  Sage Vishwamithra was unhappy at the remark of Lord Brahma and left Sathya Loka.

Sage Vishwamitra's creation of new heaven 'Thrisangu Swargam' - Sage Viswamithra performed the Yagna with the King Trishangu.   Offerings were made in the fire for twelve long hours.   Sage Vishwamithra and the King were dissatisfied to see the progress.  The King was in an anguish to return to his kingdom without achieving the objective and to face Sage Vashishta's son.   Sage Vishwamithra encouraged the King to be patient so that no one on Earth could stop him from achieving his goal.

Sage Vishwamitra and King Trisangu started to worship Lord Shiva for the completion of their task.  Lord Shiva was pleased with the Yagna progress and appeared before them.   Sage Vishwamithra expressed his desires to send the king to Heaven with his physical form. He requested Lord Shiva to bestow the power of creation like Lord Brahma. Lord Shiva blessed Sage Vishwamithra with the power of creation. Sage Vishwamithra started his creation; he   created the sun, moon, rivers, and oceans so on. As a result of his creation, everything on Earth had appeared double in number. It created a great chaos in the Universe and resulted in total devastation. All the deities approached Lord Brahma with horror and requested to stop Sage Vishwamithra from his creation lead to destruction of the entire universe.   Lord Brahma commanded to stop the creation of Sage Vishwamithra.   In response the Sage Vishwamitra wanted to fulfill the desire of the King Trishanku.  Lord Brahma after taking into consideration of the seriousness of the situation agreed to the demand of Sage Vishwamithra.

Kashi Kandam describes Maharishi Veda Vyasa's explanation to Rishis about how Mount Vidyachala was blocked the way of Lord Surya.  Once Maharishi Narada visited Mount Vindhyachal and he was received with utmost respect and honor.  Though, Maharishi Narada was pleased at the reverence of Mount Vidhyachal, before leaving Maharishi Narada relieved a sigh of worries and disappointment.  Mount Vindhyachala became anxious to know about the distress of Maharishi Narada.    Maharishi Narada revealed the   attitude of Mount Meru who was gaining all supremacy which made him concerned about.   After listening to Maharishi Narada, Vindhyachala Parvathem felt a deep sense of inferiority and started to find a source to prove its superiority over Mount Meru, so that Lord Surya would start circumambulating the Mount Vindhyachala as he does to Mount Meru.   Mount  Vindhyachal started mounting its size, it resulted in total chaos.  Lord Surya was left stranded in the horizon and the entire Universe doomed into upheaval.   As a result, one part of the Earth became too hot to live and the other part became too cold.  All the deities anxiously approached Lord Brahma.   Lord Brahma advised them to visit Kashi and meet Sage Agasthya who could control this situation amicably.  All the deities were very much pleased to visit Kashi.   All the deities arrived in this sacred land; they took a dip in the Manikarnika Theertham and worshipped Lord Vishwanatha.  Later, they proceeded to the hermitage of Sage Agasthya.   The Sage was immersed in the worship of Lord Mahadeva with his large number of disciples.

Sage Agasthya orderd Mount Vindhyachal to reduce its size - Sage Agasthya learned the chaos caused by Mount Vindhyachal from the deities.  He promised them to bring back Mount Vindhyachal on its original form.  He realized the very truth that once he crossed the land of Kashi he could not come back to his dearest place in his life time.  This very thought of leaving the 'Mokshapuri Kashi' was tormenting him.   Finally, Sage Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra left Kashi and met Mount Vindhyachal at the point where it made the impediment to Lord Surya.  Mount Vindhyachal humbly reduced its size and gave way immediately after seeing him.   Sage Agastya was pleased and instructed Mount Vindhyachal to maintain its size till he comes back from his visit to holy land in South.  Mount Vindhyachal respectfully waited and waited so long for the return of Sage Agasthya but it never happened.  Thus, Sage Agastya resolved this issue and Lord Surya could freely move on its orbit which brought back the function of the Universe into normal.

'Kashi' the sacred place for ‘Salvation' - Sage Agasthya explains to his wife Lopamudra about the holy places and mountains which could provide Dharma (righteousness), Artha (Wealth), Kama (Desires), and Moksham (Salvation).  Sage Agasthya describes the significance of the peak Sri Sailam.  The mere sight of this peak would provide salvation.  Lopamudra inquisitively asked about the importance of Kashi and other pilgrim places which are equally important.   Sage Agastya narrated her  about the places which are capable to provide salvation are Gangadhwar, Naimisharanya, Kurushetra, Avanthi, Purushothama Kshetram, Prayag, Dwaraka, Kashi, Mathura, Ayodhya, Badarikshram and Ayodhyapuri.

Lord Karthikeya explains the majesty of Kashi Kshetram to Sage Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra - Sage Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra were circumambulating the peak Sri Sailam where they met Lord Karthikeya.  Lord Karthikeya explains the importance of Kashi Kshetram.  Lord Karthikeya spoken about his desire to visit this place and the austerities required.  Also reveals the fact that it is not at all easy to visit Kashi without the blessings of Lord Mahadeva and should not miss the opportunity to visit this holy land once in life time.  Lord Karthikeya moved towards Sage Agastya and expressed his desire to touch his body as if he was touching the soil of the sacred land Kashi.  Lord Karthikeya revealed that Sage Agastya was truly blessed to reside in Kashi.
