The legend has that, the three demons Tripurasura, Kamalakshan and Vidyunmali attained several boons from Lord Brahma.  Immediately after obtaining the extraordinary boons, they started to harass deities and sages.  All the sages and deities pleaded Lord Shiva to save them from the clutches of the demons.   In order to put an end to the atrocities of the demon, Lord Shiva declared a war against Tripurasura, Kamalakshan and Vidyunmali.  The Universe has transformed into a grand chariot, Lord Surya and Lord Chandra performed the duty of a Charioteer, Deities turned into wheels of the grand chariot, Mount Meru as Bow, Serpent Vasuki as Arrow and Lord Agni as tip of the Arrow.  Lord Shiva  preceded with all his mighty forces ‘Ganas’ to the battle field and got into the grand chariot, instantly the axle of the grand chariot broke into pieces.  Soon realized the fact that initial worship of Lord Ganesha before any propitious event was not performed. Before long, the rituals were performed to Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva resumed his journey with Ganas to the battlefield. In this temple Lord Shiva can be seen with a Bow and Arrow, thus the presiding deity has got the name ‘Thiruvirkolanathar’.  When the axle of the chariot has got broken, instantly the most compassionate Lord Vishnu hold up the celestial vehicle from further damage to it.   There is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu – Sri Kariya Manicka Perumal positioned very close to the temple of Thiruvirkolanathar.

Whoever visits this temple should pay initial obeisances to Goddess Tripura Sundari and proceeds to worship Lord Tripuranthakar.  It is believed that the married couple who worships Lord Tripuranthakar and Goddess Tripura Sundari in this temple would be blessed with blissful married life.

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.oo PM in the morning and 5.00PM to 7.00PM in the evening.
