Markandeya explains to King Yudhishtira about the horrifying nature of hell
where sinners are kept under the custody of Lord Yama. One has to offer food for hungry person at
least once in their life time. Whoever neglect the opportunity may undergo the
tortures in the hell, they walk through the dark and narrow thorny paths on
sharp nails in the hell where there is large hollows crammed with terrible hot
sand. There are 28 types of hell in Yama
Loka. They are Athighora, Raudram, Ghorathama, Dukhajanani, Ghoraroopa, Tharanthara,
Bayanaka, Kaalaratri, Ghatothkata, Chanda, Mahachanda, Chandakolahala,
Chandaprachanda, Varagnika, Jaghanya, Avaraloma, Bhishini, Nayika, Karala,
Vikarala, Vajravinshti, Astha, Panchakona, Sudhirga, Parivartula, Sapthabauma,
Ashtabhauma and Dheergamaya. The sinner
has to go through all sorts of unbearable pains and agonies after their soul
departed.
