Skanda Shashti Vrutham falls on the waxing period of the moon in the Lunar month of Aippasi or Ashwin .  Skandha Shashti commemorates the glorious victory of Lord Muruga over the demon Shoora Padman.   The fierce battle between Lord Muruga and Shoora Padma lasted for six days.   At the end of the Sixth day Lord Murga beheaded the demon Soora Padman.  On these days it is a traditional practice to praise the glories of Lord Muruga. The sacred compositions of Saint Arunagirinathar praise the perpetual glory of Lord Muruga. The glorious scriptures  Skanda Puranam, Skanda Shasti Kavacham, Kandar Alangaram, Kandar Anuboothi, Kandar kalivemba, Thirumurugatrupadai, Vel Virutham, Mayil Virutham etc…  eulogize the glories of Lord Muruga.

The Six Holy Abodes of Lord Muruga are Pazhani, Swami Malai, Thirichendur ,Thiruthani, Pazhamudircholai  and  Thirupparam Kundram.  Skandha Shashti celebrations continue for six days in six holy abodes of Lord which is widely known as Aru Padai Veedu.    In six holy Abodes of Lord Muruga Thirichendur carries the special significant incident of Shoora Samhara and the wedding of Lord Muruga with Goddess Sri Deivayanai, daughter of Lord Indra.   Swamimalai is the place where Lord Muruga advised Lord Shiva the meaning of  Pranava Manthra 'Om’.   Thiruthanikai is the place where Lord Muruga's wedding with Goddess Sri Valli took place.
