Skandapuranam describes the birth of Lord Karthikeya as Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were enjoying every bit of their married life in the Gandhamana Parvatham.  During their precious moments in their life, Lord Shiva's sperm had fallen on the ground.   As a result a colossal heat was generated in the entire Universe.  Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu instructed Lord Agni to put an end to this course of action so as to save the Universe from destruction.  Lord Agni went in disguise and requested alms to Goddess Parvati.   She kept Lord Shiva's sperms on the palm of Lord Agni and it was swallowed by him instantly.   Goddess Parvati enraged to see the action of the Lord Agni and cursed him that the sperm swallowed would cause him unbearable irritation. Lord Agni approached Lord Shiva to save Him from the unbearable heat.  Lord Shiva advised Lord Agni to implant those sperms into any woman's womb that would reduce the inflammation in his body.  Lord Agni continued search on all his way to find any woman to impose the sperm carried by him.  He did not wait too long there appeared Six Krithika women.  Lord Agni immediately imposed all these sperms into their wombs and saved himself.  These 6 Krithika women got pregnant with the children, when their husbands came to know about it, they cursed the Krithikas to become Stars.  They abandoned their fetus in Mount Himalaya before transforming them into six constellations.  The holy river Ganga carried the fetus to a pond situated in a secluded place.  The fetuses were fully grown into babies and were carried by the reed. All the deities felt happy at the birth of Lord Karthikeya.  Goddess Parvati overjoyed at the sight of stunning babies in six lotuses, she carried the six babies together with boundless joy.  The six babies transformed into one with six faces and twelve hands.
