Thiru Idumbavanam/Mukthisthalam/Thiruvidumbavanam is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thiruvanur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the prominent temples of Lord Shiva famous for its stunning mural works.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.
 
Presiding deity – Sri Satgunanatheswarar/Satgunanathar/Idumbavaneswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Mangalanayaki
 
Mangalasasanam – Thiru Gnana Sambandhar
 
Thiru Gnana Sambandhar arrived on this sacred land and observed the presence of Linga all over the place.  Therefore, he was reluctant to keep his leg on the sand, he walked with two hands on the ground and approached temple.  He passionately sung praising the glories of Lord Satgunanathar in his composition.
 
Worshipped by – Lord Brahma, Lord Rama, Lord Yama,  Sage Markandeya, Sage Agastya, Idumban
 
Idumban, who was lived during Dwaparayuga, the Era of Mahabharath worshipped Lord Shiva in this sacred place.  Hence, it has got its name Idumbavanam.
 
Bhima, one of the Panchapandavas during his exile from Hasthinapur arrived in this sacred land and mesmerized at the tranquility of this place.    During this period, he met with Idumbikai at Kundrainur and got married to her.  Later, he and Idumbikai arrived at this sacred land and had a holy dip in the Brahma Theertham and worshipped Lord Shiva.
 
 
Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva and attained all the intrinsic qualities, thus the presiding deity assumed the name ‘Satguneswarar/Satgunanathar’.

Sannidhis – Lord Ganesha (Swetha Vinayaka), Lord Nandikeshwara, Lord Subramanya with his consorts Goddesses Sri Valli & Deivayanai, Idumban, Sage Agastya, Lord Surya, Lord Chandra, Nalvar, Bhairava, Thyagaraja, Thyagesar with his consort, Goddess Sri Gajalakshmi, Navagrahas, Lord Dakshinamurthi & Sanakadis, Lord Saneeswara, Lord Shiva & Goddesses Sri Parvati in their wedding attire can be seen in the sanctum.

This is one of the Mukthisthalam of Lord Shiva propitious for performing homage to ancestors and worship of Lord Satguneswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Mangalanayaki provides abundance of pieties includes the ultimate knowledge and wisdom.
 
 
This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.00 AM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 7.30 PM in the evening.
