The legend has that the entire universe was pre-destined to deluge. Lord Bhrama approached Lord Shiva with a great concern about where to begin the ‘Creation’ process immediately after the deluge? Lord Shiva advised him to deposit all the essentialities of the Creation process along with the nectar of elixir in a mud pot and float them on flood water. Also inquire him to begin the creation process from the sacred land where the mud pot settles. Lord Shiva declared that the land where the mud pot settles would never annihilate. Lord Brahma meticulously followed the divine instructions of Lord Shiva and the pot contained the elixir of nectar and the fundamentals of the creation were floated on the water and finally settled on a land. Lord Shiva shot an arrow at the pot, immediately the nectar gushed out of the pot and streched all over this part of surface on the Earth. Thus, a beautiful pond was initiated known as Mahamakam tank from the elixir of nectar and a Linga was originated from the white sand. This self-manifested Linga was consecrated as Lord Adi Kumbheshwarar and a magnificent temple was erected to for the worship Lord Adi Kumbheshwarar at Kumbakonam.

Holy dip in the Mahamakam pond on the propitious day of Masi Makam provides intrinsic values which is equivalent to dip in all the 66 crores of holy theerthas in the world. It is believed that all holy theerthas would assemble in this pond on this promising day, capable to provide abundance of merits includes circumambulating Mount Mandhara/Meru and Mount Kailas respectively. Three times of circumambulating this pond would provide salvation, liberation from the cycles of birth and death. Also eradicates the sins committed in this present life and the sins of seven ancestors, also provides pieties for the future generation.

The other auspicious day to have holy dip in this pond are Chithirai, Karthikai (Mondays), Amavasya, Pournami, days of solar and lunar eclipse, Dakshinayana Punyakala, Aippasi Vishu, Maha Shivaratri and all Fridays.
