Thirukkudamukku is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva famous for its exquisite architectural  and craftsmanship existing from the date back to 7th century.  The Kings of Chola and Nayaks also have made abundance of contributions to this temple.

Theertham – Maha Maham Theertham/Potramarai Theertham with Golden Lotuses – Holy dip in this pond on the auspicious day of Masi Makam would provides abundance of devoutness.  It is believed that all the holiest rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswathi, Narmadha, Sindhu, Cauvery, Godhavari, Sarayu, Krishna, Bhimarathi, Phalgu, Sri Gandaki, Kapila, Prayag, Vinatha and Nethravathi, assembles here on this promising day in the Maha Maham Tank.

Festivals – Theerthavari /Maha Maham celebrated once in 12 years on a Masi Makam day, Maha Shivaratri, Aippasi Annabhishekam, Arudra Darisanam, Panguni Uthiram, Thiru Karthikai, Chithirai Festival, Ani Thirumanjanam, Thirukalyana Utsavam, Adi Pooram, Navaratri,

 

 

The legend has that there was time the entire universe was predestined to deluge.  Lord Brahma secured the essentials of creation along with the nectar of immortality in a pot, kept it safely on atop the hill situated here.  At the time of deluge, the water swamped the whole area and the pot was floated for some time and finally settled in a sacred land came to known to as Kumbakonam/Kudamukku.  Lord Shiva shot an arrow on the pot and the nectar of immortality stretched all over the place, a Linga was consecrated out of this sand and remained here as Adi Kumbeswarar.

 
 

Lord Varuna was afflicted with the sin of Brahmahathya and he was trapped under the ocean, eventually the entire universe was underwent huge dismay in the absence of function of Lord Varuna.   All the deities appealed to Lord Shiva to release Lord Varuna.   Consequently, Lord Varuna was relieved from the sin on this auspicious day of Masi Makam.  Lord Varuna earnestly prayed to Lord Shiva to provide boon to the worshipper whoever takes holy dip in this pond on this propitious day would be released from the sins and attain admirable virtues.

 

Goddess Sri Parvati was born as daughter of Daksha Prajapathi and his chaste wife Prasoothi/daughter of Manu on this propitious day, with the birth star Makam.  Thus,  Masi Makam is famous for the worship of Goddess Sri Parvati.

 

Worship of Lord Adi Kumbheshwara with his consort Goddess Sri Mangalanayaki on this auspicious day of Masi Makam and holy dip in the pond provides abundance of pieties.  Performance of homage to ancestors and final rites on the holy pond situated here would provide commendable virtues and salvation.

 

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 9.00PM in the evenings.
