There are interesting myths associated with this temple.  Sage Kola arrived on this sacred land and fascinated at the tranquility of this place, he underwent severe penance near the Agni Theertham and worshipped Lord Shiva.  Lord was pleased at the austerities of Sage Kola and appeared before him.  Lord Shiva offered boon to Sage Kola, but he graciously refused to have any boon.  Instead, he prayed Lord to remain on this sacred land forever.  The most compassionated Lord agreed to the desire of Sage Kola and resided here as a self-manifested Linga.  Sage Kola had an immense desire to worship Goddess Sri Parvati all along with Lord Shiva.  Instantly, there appeared a golden line on the self-manifested Linga.   Thus Goddess Sri Parvati revealed her presence along with Lord Shiva here.

Another legend has that Sri Adi Sankara underwent severe austerities at the hills of Kudachadri and worshipped Goddess Sri Parvati.  Goddess was pleased at the devotion of Sri Adi Sankara and appeared before him.  Sri Sankara revealed his earnest desire to have a place of worship for Goddess and her perpetual presence at his birth place.  Goddess was agreed to the yearning of Sri Sankara and put forward a condition.  According to her demand Sri Sankara should lead her all the way without looking back until they reach at their destination.   Sri Sankara meticulously followed the instructions and led Goddess to his native land listening to the striking sounds of her anklets.  At one point, Goddess deliberately set the sounds of her anklets reduced to nothing.  Sri Sankara cautiously looked back for Goddess Sri Parvati, to restore confidence in him.   Instantaneously, Goddess revealed her willingness to reside at Kollur and instructed Sri Sankara to install her on this sacred land.
