Thirumazhaipadi/Thiru Patteecharam is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located on the river banks of Cauvery in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built by the Kings of Chola Dynasty famous for its exquisite architectural and craftsmanship.   The temple inscription reveals the contributions made by the Nayaks and the functions of Mutts belonged to Thiru Gnana Sambandhar, Thirunavukkarasar and Thirumoola Thevar.  Worship of Lord Dhenupureeswarar temple provides devoutness equivalent to the visit to the sacred temples of Vruddhachalam, Kamalalayam, Thiruvengadu, Thiruchaikkadu and Mount  Kailash respectively.




Presiding deity – Thiru Dhenupureeswarar/Patteeswaranathar with his consort Goddess Sri Gnanambikai/Palvana Nayaki

Worshipped by – Goddess Parvati, Lord Rama, Sage Vishwamitra, Daughter of the divine cow Kamadhenu, Dharma Sarma,



Significance -

Sage Vishwamitra was attained the honorable title ‘Brahma Rishi’ in this sacred land.



Dharma Sarma turned into a dog at the curse of Sage Medhavi.  He took a holy dip in the Gnana Theertham at regained his original form.



There are five idols of Lord Nandikeshwara can be seen in this temple and all of them were positioned off-center  at the instruction of Lord Shiva for giving a clear view of Lord Dhenupureeswarar to Thiru Gnana Sambandhar.



Lord Shiva instructed Ganas to deliver ceremonial carriage made of pearl to the divine child Thiru Gnana Sambandar.

The legend has that Lord Rama had a fierce battle with King Vali, brother of the monkey King Sugriva, eventually King Vali was killed at the war.  Soon, Lord Rama was afflicted with the sin of Brahmahathya.  Lord Rama arrived on this sacred land and created a pond at the shot of an arrow.  In order to get rid of the sin, he sanctified a Linga and continued to worship Lord Shiva.  Thus, Lord Rama got rid of the sin of Brahmahathya.




This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.30 PM in the morning and 4.30PM to 8.30 PM in the evenings.
