Thiruchathimuttram is one of the 275 Thevara  Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located on the river banks of Cauvery in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.  In this temple, Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.  This is one of the prominent temples of Lord Shiva built by the Kings of Chola Dynasty.  The temple inscriptions reveal the contributions made by the King Raja Rajachozha I, King Kulothunga Chozha III, King Sembiyam Madhevi and the Emperors of Vijayanagara Kingdom.


Presiding deity – Sri Sivakozhutheeswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Periya Nayaki

Significance – Appar conducted Uzhavara Thiruppani at this temple and tirelessly served the Lord Sivakozheeswarar.  He earnestly prayed to Lord and sung praising the glories of Lord requesting to place his holy feet on Appar’s head.  A divine voice instructed Appar to visit Thirunallur to get his prayers answered.  Consequently, Appar sincerely followed the divine instructions and his yearnings were rewarded.

The legend has that Lord Shiva instructed Goddess Parvati to undergo penance on this sacred land on Earth.  Goddess Parvati sanctified a Linga and underwent severe penance on the banks of Surya Pushkarani located here.  In order to test her devotion Lord caused flood on the river Cauvery.  Goddess Parvati embraced the sanctified Linga and protected from any ruin.    She continued strict austerities standing on one leg and pleased Lord Shiva.  Lord appeared in the form of a fire ball, without any uncertainty Goddess Parvati embraced the flames.  The compassionate Lord Shiva brought back his tranquil form at the encirclement of Goddess Sri Parvati.


This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 8.00 PM in the evenings.
