Thirupazhayarai
Vadathali is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in
Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. This is
one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built by the King Ko-Chengan of Chola
Dynasty widely known as Madakkovil. This
temple was remained in a rundown state for a long time without any periodical
maintenance but carrying a rich cultural heritage. Once again it has got back its wonderful form
with the active involvement of Swamimalai temple authorities.

The
legend has that Thirunavukkarasar visited this sacred temple and found that the
Jains were completely taken over the possession of this region. They deceitfully secreted the presiding deity
from the public view. Appar was
inconsolable; he took a vow not to leave this place without having the darshan
of Lord and continued to fast for several days.
The compassionate Lord appeared in a dream of the King who was ruled
this city and revealed his presence on this sacred land. In a little while King with his men arrived
on the site and the excavation process began.
Soon they recovered the idols of the presiding deities and Appar in a
bliss passionately sung praising the glories of Lord.
This temple remains open from 6.00 PM to 11.30 PM
in the morning and 4.30 PM to 7.30 PM in the evenings.
