The legend has that there was a fiery argument between Lord Vayu and Lord Adishesha about their supremacy. In order to prove their superiority Lord Adishesha firmly took hold of Mount Kailash with his thousand heads. Lord Vayu released massive air to extricate the clasp of Lord Adishesha. All the deities were worried at the vicious battle between these two and requested Lord Adishesha to loosen his grasp. Lord Adishesha graciously loosened his clasp on Mount Kailash, instantaneously Lord Vayu released colossal air on Mount Kailash which resulted in separation of two hills from the cluster; consequently one was positioned in Thirunallur and the other one at Thiruavur.

The divine cow Kamadhenu was cursed by Sage Vashishta.  Kamadhenu arrived at this sacred of Govindakudi and sincerely followed the divine instruction of Lord Brahma.  She worshipped the Linga with its milk and Lord was pleased at the devotion of Kamadhenu, eventually relieved from the curse.
