The legend has
that the entire Universe was swamped by the torrential rain, surprisingly Thenkudithittai
remained unharmed and there appeared five self-manifested Linga. Worship of these Panch Linga provides
devoutness equivalent to the visit of Pancha Bootha Sthalangal such as
Thillai/Chidambaram, Thiruvanaikka, Thirukalahasthi, Thirukacchi Ekambam and
Thiruvannamalai respectively.
Another legend
has that Sage Bruhaspathi arrived at Indra Loka and found that Lord Indra was
too occupied in the entrancing dances of celestial dancers, so he completely
ignored the visit of Deva Guru Bruhaspathi.
Sage Bruhaspathi felt terribly disappointed at the demeanor of Lord
Indra and left Deva Loka. He arrived at
Thenkudithittai and started to worship Lord Shiva. Soon, the three worlds started to face
appalling problems due to the absence of a Guru/Acharya. Lord Indra realized his folly and went in
search of Guru Bruhaspathi. He visited
many sacred shrines of Lord Shiva and worshipped, he sincerely carried out
search for Sage Bruhaspathi. Finally he
arrived on this sacred land and solemnly prayed to Lord. Lord Shiva was pleased at the devotion of
Lord Indra and revealed the presence of Deva Guru Bruhaspathi in this sacred
shrine, eventually Lord Indra prayed Guru Brushaspathi for forgiveness.
This temple
remains open from 6.00AM to 10.00AM in the morning and 5.00PM to 7.30PM in the
evenings.
