Chozha King
Subadeva and his wife Kamalavathi had no offspring for long time. They worshipped Lord Shiva at Chidambram and
earnestly prayed for a virtuous progeny.
In due course of time Queen conceived a child with the blessings of
Lord. The due date for the delivery was
announced. But the predictions were made
that the prescribed time for the delivery of the child as inauspicious. Queen Kamalavathi ordered to hang her upside
down in order to postpone the time of delivery and give birth to her child in a
promising time. The orders were sincerely
carried out and a beautiful male child was born in an auspicious time to the
royal couple and named him Ko-Chengan as his eyes were reddish at the time of
birth.
Thiru Ko-Chengan
Chozha was the hire to the throne. At
the right age, he was crowned as the King of Chozha Kingdom and his father
attained the Abode of Lord Shiva. During
his regime, King Ko-Chengan built numerous temples for Lord Shiva and strongly promoted
Shaivism. The magnificent temples built by
King K-Chengan widely known as Madakovil, which has narrow entrances not
possible for an elephant to enter into the temple for the worship of Lord.
In previous
birth Thiru Ko-Chengan was a Spider who worshipped the Linga with its webs. There was a Linga appeared in the woodland of
Jambu/Vennaval on the river banks of Cauvery.
This Linga was worshipped by an Elephant and a Spider with competitive spirit. The elephant brings water and flower on its
trunk and applied on the Linga. The Spider
constructed remarkable web on the top of the Linga in order to prevent falling
dry leaves on it. These two devotees
continued their customs of worship for quite some time.
The legend has that the two Ganas of Lord Shiva were born as
elephant and spider at the curse of Lord. Ganas were destined to be engaged in
the self-less service to Lord. Lord Shiva appeared as a Linga under a tree in
Jambukvanam on this sacred land. The elephant worshipped Lord Shiva with the
fresh alluring flowers and trunk full of water from the nearest pond. The
spider worshipped Lord with its magnificent webs as a shield on top of the
Linga to protect it from falling dry leaves. The elephant was unhappy with the
webs all around, patiently removes the web and keep the place tidy and clean,
the spider was dejected at the act of the elephant. Both the worshippers were
unhappy at each other’s and the hostility towards each other’s deepened. The
spider sneaked into the trunk of the elephant and bit him. The elephant
forcefully thrashed its trunk on the floor with accumulated pain; both of them
were died instantly. Soon, the elephant relieved from the curse and attained
his position as one of the Shiva Ganas. The spider was remained on the Earth to
fulfill its desire to build temples to protect the Linga. The spider took birth
as King Kochengan and built several magnificent temples to worship Lord Shiva. During
his regime King Ko-Chengan built numerous temples known for Madakovil (which has
narrow steps and corridors) and Thiruvanaikka is the first and foremost temples
in that row.
In the Tamil
month Masi – Sathayam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day of Thiru Ko-Chengan
Choza Nayanar, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
