Thiru Neelakanda
Yazhppanar was born in Thiru Yerukkathampuliyur. He was a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva. He marvelously plays the string instrument Yazh
which he was used to carry all over the places.
He visited many sacred shrines of Lord and worshipped Lord with the
harmonious sounds of Yazh. He put his
mind and soul in to the string instrument and produced fabulous music praising
the glories of Lord.
Thiru Yazhppanar
visited Alavai/Madurai and carried out his sincere method of worship. He humbly stood out of the temple premise, he
worshipped Lord with utmost devotion and immersed at the melodious sounds of
Yazh. Lord was pleased at the devotion of
Thiru Yazhppanar. On that day, Lord
appeared in the dream of the Brahmin priests and ordered them to bring Thiru
Yazhppanar to the Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple. At the divine instruction of Lord, Thiru
Yahppanar was received with great honor to the sanctum of this temple. Thiru Yazhppanar was in a blissful
state. A mysterious voice instructed to
provide a dais for Thiru Yazhppanar so that the Yazh would remain safe and
sound.
Thiru Yazhppanar
arrived at Thiruvarur, he modestly stood before the temple premise staring at the
majestic temple tower and worshipped Lord with his soulful music in Yazh. Lord was much delighted to the music of Thiru
Yazhppanar, immediately an opening was appeared on the strong compound wall. Thiru Yazhppanar realized the will of the Lord;
he entered through this entrance to the sanctum of the temple and sang praising
the Lord at his heart’s content.
Thiru Yazhppanar
continued his spiritual journey to many sacred places of Lord with his
wife. At Shirkazhi he met Thiru Gnana
Sambandhar and expressed his deepest desire to play Yazh for his music. Thiru Yazhpannar stayed behind at the heavenly
union of Thiru Gnana Sambandhar and attained salvation.
In the Tamil
month Vaikasi – Moolam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day of Thiru
Neelakanda Yazhppanar, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
