Thiru Gananathar was born in Shirkazhi. He was born in a Vedic Brahmin family. He was a zealous devotee of Lord Shiva; he
induced the essence of Shaiva Siddhantha and worship of Lord Shiva to the masses. In this way he generated unparallel devotion
and faith in Shiva Siddhantha amongst the villagers. He inspired them to engage in self-less
service and devotion to Lord, assigned them with various tasks like cleaning
the temple and its premises, maintenance of temple garden, collecting flowers
and garland making, lightening lamps, Vedic chanting, assisting in smooth functioning
of the temple etc. In this way, Gananathar created the villagers’ more
disciplined and responsible youth.
He captivated the attention of the people at
large and inspired them with the fascinating myths of Lord Shiva. Thiru Gananathar was greatly devoted and was mesmerized at the principles of Thiru
Gnana Sambandhar, who was one of the prominent Shivaite Saints strived for
reinstating the glories of Shaiva Siddhantha.
Gananathar continued his marvelous service to Lord and finally attained
the Abode of Lord Shiva.
In the Tamil month Panguni – Thiruvathirai is
widely celebrated as Guru Puja Day, the day Thiru Gananatha Nayanar attained
the Abode of Lord Shiva.
