Kootruvar Nayanar was born in
Kalandai Adityeswaram, one of the flourished lands in Chozha Kindgom. He was a zealous devotee of Lord Shiva and was
Chieftain of Kalandai. He worshipped
Lord Adityeswara with his consort Goddesss Sri Prabhanayaki and tirelessly
served Lord and his devotees. He was bestowed
with immense wealth; it was aptly utilized for the service of Lord and his
devotees. His desire to get crowned by the people of his clan was refused and
he was left alone. His desire to get crowned was not just a coronet; he
believed it as an opportunity to carry Lord’s feet on his head.
On that night, Thiru Kootruvar had a dream in
that Lord himself appeared before him and placed his leg on Thiru
Kootruvar. In this way, Kootruvar’s
yearning to carry Lord’s feet on his head was fulfilled. He continued his remarkable service to Lord
and his devotees and finally attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
In the Tamil month Adi – Thiruvadhirai is widely
celebrated as the Guru Puja Day, the day Thiru Kootruvar Nayanar attained the
Abode of Lord Shiva.
