The legend has that there was a time the whole world was remained unadulterated without any sinners.   Dharmadevan was lived a righteous life, he was well known for his uprightness  in all three worlds.  The living beings lived a deathless life as there were no sinners in the universe.  Once, a celestial Gandharva was attracted towards a stunning virgin girl from Devaloka, he was mesmerized at the beauty of her and approached with lustful desire.  Fortunately, she was protected by Dharmadevan.  In a short while, there were several sinful deeds took place in  all three worlds.  Lord Shiva called for Dharmadevan and assigned the task  of dealing with the countless sinners and provide them with appropriate punishment.    Lord advised Dharmadevan to take up the duty assigned with utmost faith and righteousness.  If he has committed any mistake in his duty would affect his precious title 'Yama Dharma Rajan'.  Initially Dharmadevan was happy at his new work, later he was doubtful about his ability to perform.  Dharmadevan was afflicted with the sin while performing his duty. He underwent severe austerities praying to Lord and got rid of the sin.  Lord Shiva appeared before him and cheered him declaring that he will soon have an assistant Chithraguptha to perform the task smoothly.  Dharmadevan had new appearance at the will of Lord, but Dharmadevan was not all happy about the new look.  Lord comforted saying that the task performed by him needs severe uprightness and new look; he has the sole right to take away the life that would provide him  with the most rewarding and topmost title Yama Dharma Rajan.

Lord Yama undertook severe austerities and visited many holy places of Lord Vishnu.  He arrived on this sacred land and mesmerized at the tranquility of this place.  He continued to worship Lord Vishnu at the hills on this land.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Yama Dharmarajan and appeared before him.  Yama was completely forgot  the purpose of his penance and immersed at the captivating beauty of Lord.  Finally, Lord Vishnu reminded him to ask for a boon; Yama revealed his desire to worship Lord at his heart’s content and prayed to remain in the same most attractive form on this sacred land.     Further, Lord Vishnu instructed the celestial architect Vishwakarma to build a temple that has seven circumambulatory paths as desired by Lord Yama.  The sanctum sanctorum is known as Nangal Kundram.  Thus, Lord Vishnu decided to reside in this temple as Kallazhagar/Sundararajan with his consorts Goddesses Sri Devi & Boodevi.  Its believed that this is one of the sacred templeon the Earth where Lord Yama still continuing  worship of  Lord Vishnu .

This temple remains open from 6.30 AM  to 11.30AM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 7.30 PM in the evenings.
