The
great epic ‘Periya Puranam’ composed by Thiru Shekkilar in Tamil describes the
life of great Shivaite Saints. Somasi Nayanar was born in
village called Thiruambar/Thiruvambur.
Somasi Nayanar was zealous devotee of Lord Shiva; he was born in a
Brahmin and led a righteous life. He
received the devotees of Lord in his home with great honor and served them
food. He worshipped Lord with outmost
faith and devotion, engaged in fire sacrifices and chanting of Veda.
Somasi
Nayanar worshipped Lord Brahmapurishwarar and his consort Goddess Poonkuzhal
Nayaki at Thiruvarur. He met Thiru
Sundaramurthy Nayanar and found immense pleasure in his association and settled
in Thiruvarur itself. He wholeheartedly
accepted Thiru Sundaramurthy Nayanar as his mentor. He spent the remaining life engaged in self –
less service to Guru and the devotees of Lord.
In the
Tamil month Vaikasi Ayilyam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day, the day
Somasi Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
