Thiruvelliyangudi
Sri Kola Valvilli Ramar temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu
situated in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. One
of the great Vaishnavaite scholars Sri Periyavacchan Pillai was born in Shenganur
a place close to Thiruvelliyangudi. It
is believed that worship of Sri Kola Valvilli Rama in this sacred land would provide
the devoutness equivalent to worship of Lord Vishnu in all the 108 Divya
Desams.

The
legend has that Mayan (father of Mandodhari, wife of the demon King Ravana) was a renowned sculptor of Danavas
likewise Vishwakarma for Devas. Mayan
constructed many stunning palaces for Danavas had a desire to build a worship
place of Lord Rama. At the divine instruction of Lord Brahma, Mayan underwent
severe penance praying to Lord Vishnu in this sacred land. Lord Vishnu pleased at the devotion of
Mayan and provided dharshan. Mayan
earnestly prayed to Lord to grant his dharshan as Lord Rama. The most compassionate Lord instantaneously
approved Mayan’s wish and instructed Sri Garuda to hold his divine weapons
Conch and Dice. Mayan had dharshan of Lord Rama with bow and
arrow in this sacred land. Garudalwar
can be seen with four hands in that two hands holding Conch and Dice.
Another
legend has that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Vamana and approached the demon
King Mahabali in his Yagna arena. King
Mahabali was impressed at the very appearance of adorable young Vamana. He instantly agreed to offer jewels, precious
stones, wealth etc...as alms to charming brahmachari. Lord Vamana gracefully rejected all the
precious jewels and wealth as alms. He instructed
King Mahabali to provide him a piece of land which could be measured with his
teeny tiny foot. King Mahabali with his wife Vindhyavali prepared to offer alms
to Brahmachari. At this moment, Danava Guru Shukracharya approached King
Mahabali and advised him to put an end to this practice. But the righteous King Mahabali does not want
to break his promise already made to a Brahmachari, so he continued the process
of offering alms to Lord Vamana. In
order to stop King Mahabali and save his kingdom, Shukracharya disguised into a
bee and hid on the mouth of the vessel used to pour water and initiate the procedure,
thus Shukracharya tactfully blocked the water flow. Lord Vamana realized the trick played by
Shukracharya, he took a sharp point Dharba grass and pierced the outlet. Consequently, Shukracharya lost his
eyesight. Shukracharya prayed to Lord
Vishnu for forgiveness and worshipped Lord in many sacred places. Finally, he worshipped Lord Vishnu at Thiruvelliyangudi
and regained his vision.
