The legend has that Lord Vishnu expressed his desire to have a form of Linga which he was admired considerably.   Lord Shiva instructed Lord Vishnu to undergo severe penance on this sacred land to fulfill his wishes.  Lord Vishnu underwent severe penance here at the instruction of Lord Shiva.  In the meantime, Thiru Gnana Sambandhar an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva visited this sacred land and found Lord following severe austerities.  Sambandhar imagined it was Lord Shiva, he passionately sang beautiful verses praising the glories of Lord Shiva.  Lord Vishnu, who was under severe penance happened to listen the glorious verses of Sambandhar and he started to dissolve at the devotion to Lord Shiva.  Finally, Lord Vishnu attained the form of a Linga as he was desired and the feet of Lord Sriman Narayana remained. Therefore, in the sanctum sanctorum a self-manifested Linga and Lord Vishnu’s feet can be seen.
