Thiru Dandi Adigalar was born in Tiruvar and he was blind by birth.  He was a zealous devotee of Lord Shiva from a young age.  His blindness was not at all an obstacle for his worship to Lord.  He worshipped Lord Valmikanathar and Goddess Kamalambikai in a temple situated in Tirvarur.

It was the period Jains were confiscated a major part of this area and enforced their beliefs on the innocent people lived here.  They partially succeeded in their mission of annihilate the belief in Shaiva Siddhantha.  Gradually, they took control over the west side of temple tank of Sri Valmikanathar Temple.  Dandi Adigalar strongly believed that service to devotee is Service to Lord.  He took up the challenge before him and with his unfaltering will power he decided to renovate the temple tank which was in a devastating state. He proved to the world that physical disabilities were not a hindrance for his mission. With the help of rope tied to the poles, he walked through the rough pathways of the temple tank; he excavates the land and removes the sand from the place.  He continued his arduous work vigorously.  The Jains who were settled here were annoyed by his deed.  They attacked him with sheer criticism, mocked him and insulted him pouring harsh words.  They disapproved his act saying that it would take away the life of innocent creatures.  But Dandi Adigalar was very firm in his mission and continued his laborious act. The argument between Dandi Adigalar and the Jains were continued.  Dandi Adigalar was totally frustrated at the strong criticism about his personal disabilities.  In return, he declared himself as blessed with inner light and wisdom of Lord.  With the grace of Lord he would attain his eyesight and avowed that though they had eyesight they are blind with arrogance and misdemeanors. Instantaneously a few of the Jains were irritatingly came forward and pulled down the poles and ropes which were he used to walk through and Dandi Adigalar had to return empty handed.

Extremely disappointed Dandi Adigalar wept bitterly before the Lord.  He went back to his home and lamented over the task he left unfinished.  He spent that night grieved over the incidents happened and slowly drifted to sleep.  That night Dandi Adigalar had a dream in that Lord comforted him that he would be blessed with eyesight very soon and the Jains would be punished for their treacherous act. The most compassionate Lord appeared in the dream of the King who was ruling that city and instructed him to put an end to the sufferings of his passionate devotee - Dandi Adigalar.  The King arrived at the spot immediately and Dandi Adigalar explained the painful incident happened.

On the next day King and his men arrived near the temple pond along with the huge crowd of villagers.  As the whole crowd was witnessing Dandi Adigalar got into the temple pond, chanting the holy Panchaskhara Mantra.   He had a dip on this sacred water and rose enthusiastically.  With the boundless mercy of Lord he got his vision and the Jains who were harassed Adigalar were lost their eyesight and they were pathetically moved around.   Dandi Adigalar with his sheer determination and dedication to Lord proved that everything was possible.   Dandi Adigalar completed the task successfully and continued his self- less service to Lord.

In the Tamil month Panguni – Sathayam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day, the day Dandi Adigalar attained the holy Abode of Lord Shiva.
