There
are several legends associated with this sacred place; Lord Subramanya’s
marriage to Goddess Deivayanai took place in Thiruparamkundram immediately
after beheading the demon Shoorapadman.
Lord Indra offered his daughter’s hand to Lord Subramanya praising his
valor and also presented Indra’s white elephant Iravatham for the procession of
newly wedded celestial couple. After the
glorious incident, Lord Vishnu envisioned the procession of the celestial couple
in Thirumagaral once again.
Another
legend has that Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva in this sacred place and
planted a mysterious jack fruit tree.
This tree would yield fruit of extraordinary flavor on daily basis. This awe-inspiring incident reached the ears
of King Rajendra Chola who was ruling this state, he ordered the villagers to
offer the fruit as Bhog to Lord of Chidambaram on every daily basis after
offering to Lord the Bhog should be presented before the King. Though it was a difficult task to bring in practice,
the villagers sincerely followed the verdict of the King. They carried this fruit from Thirumagaral to
Chidambaram crossing the rough pathways and performed their duty assigned.
The
villagers carried out the order of the King with utmost dedication. Once it was the turn of a Brahmin boy to
carry the fruit from Thirumagaral to Chidambaram. As the boy was too young to perform the duty,
the entire villagers offered their assistance.
The boy was too frustrated at this, decided to burn the tree into
ashes. Seeing the hardships of the
villagers and the painstaking job of carrying the fruit a long way by them made
him set fire to this magnificent tree. When
the King came to know about this, he ordered that the boy should be banished
from the village at once.
The
King and his men took the boy out of this village, on their way a golden
colored chameleon darted on his way. He
chased the chameleon and it whizzed into a mound made by ants. King’s men tried hard to clear the anthill,
blood started oozing out of it and they could listen to a mysterious voice
ordered the King to build a temple on its place.
A demon
worshipped Lord Shiva with utmost faith and dedication in this sacred
land. Thus he was saved from the ferocious
battle of Soora Samhara of Lord subramanya.
Hence, Lord assumed as Thiru Magaraleshwarar and particularly known in
Thirumagaral.
It is
believed that intake of Abisheka Theertha of Lord Cures all kind of illnesses
and bestowed with peace in married life.
This
temple remains open from 7.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 6.00 PM to 8.00PM
in the evenings.
