Onam – Thiruvonam Festival on 9th Friday, 2011 !!

Jai Sriman Naryana !!

Wishing my blog readers ‘Happy and Joyous Onam’ !!

The most anticipated festival of Kerala begins ten days before the day of Thiruvonam commemorates the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Sri Vamana.

There is a song  ‘Maveli Nadu Vaneedum Kalam Manusharellarum Onnupoley..’  (While the regime of demon King Mahabali, there was absolute peace, prosperity happiness and Equality prevailed in his Kingdom).    The festival of Onam celebrates widely across the globe to honor the life of the righteous King Mahabali – Grandson of Prahlada on this Earth.  This festival begins in the Malayalm month ‘Chingam’, on the day of ‘Hastham’ star which falls ten days before ‘Thiruvonam’.  ‘Onam Pookalam’ – Floral decorations in front of courtyard is a  visual treat for eyes from the first day of Onam and it continues till the festival ends. ‘Onam Sadhya’ – Grand lunch on the 10th day of Onam with all special delicacies like: Kalan, Koottu, Olan, Thoran, Aviyal, Palada Pradhaman, Pappadam, Injipuli, upperi etc…. (I am not sure about the names of it; sorry, a good eater but not a good cook.) .  The ‘Onam Sadhya’ is one of the joyful moments with the presence of family and friends.

Wishing my blog readers ‘Happy and Joyous Onam’!!
Jai Sriman Narayana !!
