Nageshwar Jyotir Linga is one of the Dwadasha Jyotir Linga temple situated in Beyt Dwaraka Island in Gujarat. The presiding deity of the temple is Nageshwar worshipped in the form of Linga with his consort Nageshwari. The other two temples which enshrine Nageshwar Jyotir Linga are Audhgram near Purna in Andra Pradesh and Almora in Uttar Pradesh. There is a separate shrine for Lord Nandi in this temple premise. Moreover, there are shrines of 12 Jyotir Lingas, Veda Vyasa Linga, Bhandareshwar, Nilakanteshwar, Lord Ganesha, Dattatreya, Murali Manohar, Dasavathara also can be seen here. Inside this temple is situated the temple tank known as Runamochan Theerth. The mughal emperor Aurangazeb who was intolerant to other religions invaded the grand temple of Nageshwar. But it was ended in vain, half way of his unscrupulous mission there were huge number of wild bees attacked him. Later, the temple has been renovated into a grand scale.
The legend has that, there was a demon named Daruka lived with his wife Daruki in the dense forest of Daruka (Darukavanam). He harassed all the saintly people thereby made their life miserable. Though he had all the demonic nature in him, he was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Once, there appeared a merchant – Supriya, who was a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva. The demon Daruka approached Supriya and demanded him to teach the usual norms of worship of Lord Shiva. Supriya worried that the demon would use his extraordinary powers once after receiving the blessings, after following severe austerities and worship of Lord Shiva. Thus, Supriya hesitated to teach the prescribed rules and regulations to worship Lord. It made Daruka exacerbate his frustration towards Supriya and started harassing him. He imprisoned Supriya and played all means to put hindrance on his worship of Lord. Supriya did not move an inch from his staunch devotion to Lord Shiva. After seeing the firm devotion of Supriya, the most compassionate Lord Shiva appeared before him. Lord blessed Supriya for his firm faith and beheaded the demon Daruka with his Pasupatastram for his atrocities.
Another legend has that, Pandavas during their exile arrived in Darukavanam. They built a hermitage in this forest and let their cattle on the lush green land. The cattle were settled down in the nearby plush land, they arrive in the close by river to drink water. Every time, after consuming water from the river the cattle let their milk flow down as an offering on the river as a mark of gratitude. Once, Bhima had the opportunity to witness the astonishing sight. Bhima informed Yudhishtira about the miraculous event and they all arrived at the river bank. They made a herculean task thereby dried up the river. In the center portion of the river was restricted with boiling water stood as an obstacle to complete their task. Bhima used his dangerous weapon Mace to attack three times on the boiling water. Ultimately, the boiling water gave way to an astounding sight of the existence of Jyotir Linga.
