Sri Daksha Mahadev Temple in Kankhal is one of the sacrosanct place of Lord Shiva.   Kankhal is a small village situated 4 Km away from  Haridwar.   There are many religious institutions and ashrams are located here.    In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of  Linga.  Sri Daksha Mahadev Temple where Dakasha Prajapati performed Yaga known as 'Daksha Yaga' and Sati  sacrificed her life on the sacrificial fire.

The legend has that Daksha Prajapathi conducted a Yagam to invoke deities and seek their blessings.  He invited all the dieties with honor except his son-in- Law Lord Shiva and  daughter  Sati.  Sati came to know about the Yagam, she was curious to visit her parents and attend the Yagam.  She obtained permission from Lord Shiva after a series of arguments and  reluctantly set to leave Mount Kailash.  Lord Shiva sent His 'Boothaganas' (warriors) to escort her.

When she reached the Yagasala,  found that all the deities were present.  The Yagam was already in progress.  Her father - Daksha Prajapathi did not come forward to receive his daughter.  Instead, he started insulting her and accused her as  an imposter.  Sati found it hard to withstand the insult.  Dakasha Prajapathi ordered the sages not to perform any offerings to Lord Shiva or Chant any of the Shadakshara Mantras 'Om Nama Shivaya'  during the whole Yaga.  Daksha Prajapathi continued to insult Lord Shiva.  It made Sati furious and deepily disappointed, she jumped into the sacrifical fire.

Lord Shiva came to know about the sacrifice made by Sati.  The most infuriated Lord appeared on the Yagasala and lifted Sati's body from the sacrificial fire.  He began the 'Roudra Thandava' (celestial dance).  As a result, the whole Universe went  on sufferings, all the deities approached Lord Shiva and brought  peace in the Universe.

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara!!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!
