Skanda Puranam describes the celestial marriage of Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati and the Birth of Lord Karthikeya.  Thai Poosam commemorates the day Lord Karthikeya beheaded the demon Tharakasura .   It is widely celebrated in all the Murugan Temples in India and abroad as well.

Maheshwara Kandam describes Goddess Sati sacrificed her life in the sacrificial fire of Yagna conducted by her father Dakshaprajapathi.  The sudden demise of Goddess Sati brought Lord Shiva in an appalling state.  Lord Shiva lost interest in everything and led a horrendous life.  Lord Shiva's absence in performance of his responsibilities as destroyer of sins caused accumulation of sins in the Universe.  The demon Tharakasura got boon from Lord Brahma, that no one in the Universe could kill him other than a child.  After obtaining extra-ordinary boons, Tharakasura started harassing the deities.  All the deities were well aware of the fact that only Lord Shiva's son could get rid of the demon Tharakasura.  Lord Shiva was leading an austere life and engaged in severe penance out of grief.  All the deities were engaged in persuading Lord Shiva to marry and give birth to a child who could kill the demon Tharakasura.  The deities entrusted the responsibility to interrupt the severe penance of Lord Shiva to Lord Kamadeva.  The end result was Kamadeva burned into ashes; it made his wife Rathi fallen into extreme state of grief.  Goddess Parvati (Girija/ an incarnation of Sati) assured Rathi that she would bring Kamadeva back to her life once again.  Finally, Goddess Parvati with her firm devotion and severe penance got married to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the happily married celestial couple lived in Gandhamana Parvatham. In due course of time Lord Karthikeya's birth took place.  All the deities were happy at the turn of the events that a child has arrived to take away the life of the demon Tharakasura.  Lord Karthikeya with the army of deities entered the battlefield to fight against the demon Tharakasura.  The Great War took place between Tharakasura and Lord Karthikeya in the islands amid the River Ganga and Yamuna.  During the war, Tharakasura attacked Lord Indra and he was badly hurt.  King Muchukunda confronted Tharakasura, unfortunately he could not withstand the demon and seriously wounded.  Sage Narada advised the deities that demon that has already possessed all the 'Ashta Sidhis' (Anima, mahima, garima, laghima etc...) only Lord Karthikeya could fight against him.  Veerabhadra already made damages to the warriors of demons; Tharakasura started using illusionary powers against the deities.  The ferocious battle between the Deities and demons continued, Lord Vishnu instructed Lord Karthikeya to use the weapon provided by his parents,  Tharakasura  was killed at the fierce battle.  The deities were delighted at the Victory over the demon Tharakasura.  Eventually, Lord Karthikeya's marriage with Devasena, Daughter of Indra took place.
