Significance –

Lord Rama was afflicted with the sin of Brahmahathya, after the fierce battle between Ravana.  In order to get rid of the sin, Lord Rama performed various Yagnas, ultimately arrived on this sacred land at the instruction of Sage Vashishta and consecrated a Linga /Rameshwara Linga and underwent severe austerities.

It’s the sacred shrine where the Pradosha Puja was initiated for the first time.

The legend has the demons and deities were churning the milky ocean for the elixir of nectar, using Mount Mandhara as the center point and the King of serpent Vasuki as its rope, at one point of time Vasuki spewed the venomous poison due to the immense pressure applied on it.  The deities and demons appealed to Lord Shiva to protect the Universe from the massive disaster.  Lord Shiva gracefully swallowed the poison, eventually laid down keeping his head on the lap of Goddess Sri Parvati to get rid of the adverse effects of the poison consumed.  Goddess Sri Parvati gently pressed his throat to remain the deadly poison on the throat, without letting it enter into the abdomen of the Lord.  Hence, Lord Shiva has attained the sacred name Neelakanda.  This is the sacred land on Earth where Lord Shiva laid down after consuming the venomous poison, all the deities and Rishis and Sages arrived on this sacred land and eulogized the glories of Lord Shiva.

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 1.00 PM in the morning and 3.30 PM to 8.30PM in the evenings.
