Thiruvalanchuzhi is one of the Thevarashivasthalam/Parivara Kshetram of Lord Shiva located in Thiruvalanchuzhi, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.  The temple inscriptions reveal the contribution made by King Rajaraja Chola, King Paranthaka Chola I.





Presiding deity – Sri Thiruvalanchuzhinathar/ Sadaimudinathar/Karpakanathar with his consort Goddess Sri Periynayaki,Swetha Vinayakar/Nuraipillaiyar/Vellai Pillaiyar


 


Worshipped by - Goddess Sri Parvati, Adi Shesha, Lord Indra, Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Sage Heranda, Sage Durvassa, Cauvery,


Cauvery was trapped into a burrow which created by Lord Adishesha; due to this the people became anxious without the water source on this land.  Sage Heranda plunged into the tunnel, scarified his life and retrieved Cauvery on the surface of Earth once again.  Cauvery emerged out close to this sacred shrine and circumambulated the Lord.   Hence, this place has got its name Thiruvalanchuzhi.

The legend has that Sage Durvassa presented a flower garland to Lord Indra who was merrily travelling on his celestial Airavatha, the flower garland was previously adored to Goddess Sri Mahalakshimi.  Lord Indra carelessly placed it on the Airavatha was thrown into the ground and thrashed.   Sage Durvassa who was famous for his uncontrollable anger, cursed Lord Indra.  Due to the curse Lord Indra lost his fame and glories.  Lord Indra approached Lord Brahma and pleaded for a solution to regain the glories.  Lord Vishnu advised churning the milky ocean with the assistance of demons would re- instate the glories once again.  The   deities and demons initiated churning of milky ocean for the elixir of immortality utilizing Mount Mandhara and Serpent Vasuki.   Shortly,  Halala poison spew out of serpent Vasuki was capable to destroy the entire Universe was gracefully swallowed by Lord Shiva.  Goddess Sri Parvati got hold of the poison and it remained in the throat, therefore Lord Shiva assumed the form of Lord Neelakanda.  Maharishi Narada advised deities to initiate worship of Lord Ganesha, remover of obstacle that would provide success in their endeavors.    Lord Indra realized their folly and created an image of Lord Ganesha with the foam appeared on the surface of the ocean and worshipped, eventually the churning of Milky Ocean turned out fruitful and many precious resources emerged out of the ocean, ultimately the elixir of immortality.




This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
