Thirukkottur /Indrapuram/Melkottur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Mannargudi, Thiruvanur District, Tamil Nadu.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.
 
Presiding deity – Thiru Kozhuntheeswarar/Sameevaneswarar/Kotturnarkozhunth/Kozhunthnathar with his consort Goddess Sri Madhurabhashini/Thenarmozhiyal/Thenambal/Themozhippavai
 
Mangalasasanam – Thiru Gnana Sambandhar
Thiru Gnan Sambandhar in one of his compositions fervently praising the glories of Lord Kozhuntheeswarar and narrates the beautiful environment of this sacred place.  It’s mentioned that whoever worships Lord Kozhuntheeswarar would remain in the world of deities after their death.  Worship of Lord Kozhuntheeswarar provides abundance of pieties includes fame, perpetual prosperity, and removal of obstacles.

The legend has that the demon Vruthasura harassed the deities and Sages after obtaining several boons.  Lord Indra appealed to Lord Brahma and earnestly prayed for a suggestion to get rid of the demon.  Lord Brahma advised Lord Indra that the Vajrayudham, a fierce weapon made out of the backbone of Sage Dadhichi would assist in vanquishing the demon.  As predicted by Lord Brahma, the Vajrayudham made of out the bone of Sage Dadhichi was killed the demon Vruthasura.  Soon Lord Indra was afflicted with the sin of Brahmahathya due to the demise of Sage Dadhichi.   Lord Indra arrived on this sacred land on Earth as per the advice of Sage Bruhaspathi, Deva Guru and underwent severe penance worshipping Lord Shiva.  He created a pond and worshipped a Linga positioned under the Vanni tree.  Thus, Lord Indra was relieved from the sin of Brahmahathya.
 
 
This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning and 4.30PM to 7.30 PM in the evenings.
