The legend has that the Deities and Danavas while churning the milky ocean for the elixir of Immortality, with Mount Mandara as the center point and the serpent Vasuki as rope, before long Mount Mandara started tilting due to the immense pressure applied; Lord Vishnu incarnated as huge tortoise and took hold of Mount Mandara from slanting, thus the churning of ocean carried out without any impediment.   Instantly Vasuki coughed up Halahala poison that was gracefully swallowed by Lord Shiva in order to save the Universe from destruction.    The most compassionate Goddess Sri Parvati seized the poison and eventually it remained on the throat of Lord and assumed the form of Nilkanda Mahadev.  After consuming the poison Lord Shiva with extreme drowsiness arrived on this sacred land and took rest on the lap of Goddess Sri Parvati.    Maharishi Narada informed the deities about the situation of Lord Shiva.  Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Saptharishis were hurried to this place was stopped by Nandikeshwara with a purpose of not to cause any disturbances to Lord’s Bhoganidra.  Lord Shiva got out of the Nidra and elated to view the presence of deities around him.  The compassionate Lord performed Ananda Thandavam, one of the cosmic dance forms before the deities; they witnessed the divine form of Lord at their hearts content on a Krishnapaksha Trayodhashi day known as  Mahapradosham Day.
