King Manuneeti Chozha was a righteous ruler
from the lineage of solar dynasty ruled Thiruvanur as capital of his
Kingdom. He was well protected his
Kingdom and its people from the enemies and provided plenty of support and
wealth for performing rituals. He
offered abundance of wealth to the temple of Lord Shiva in Thiruvanur. King Manu had a virtuous and charming son who
has profound knowledge in arts and various subjects was a perfect heir to the
throne. Once, the prince went for an
expedition with his men through the village of Thiruvanur while riding the
chariot merrily through the streets all of a sudden a calf scurried to the
wheel of his Chariot and died instantly.
The mother cow was rushed to the scene with utter grief and tears
rolling down licked all over the body of the dead calf. The son of King Manu felt terrible at this unpleasant
incident, he returned to palace with extreme shame and guilt. He felt himself worthless to mention as the son
of a blameless ruler who was well-known for his honesty and integrity. He
heavy heartedly approached the Vedic scholars seeking advice for the reparation
of the sin he had committed.
In the meantime, the grief
stricken mother cow hurried to the palace and rang the bell positioned in the
courtyard continuously with its horn.
There was a custom in the Kingdom of King Manuneeti Chozha that whoever
facing problems due to misdemeanor or miseries should inform their troubles to
King at any time by ringing the huge bell installed in the courtyard of the
palace. So that, the people of the
Kingdom be able to have justice for their troubles at all times. King rushed to see the complainer who was
ringing the bell. Surprisingly it was a
mother cow with tears rolling down. The
minister explained the reason for ringing the bell that the mother cow was
mourning at the death of its calf under the wheel of Prince’s chariot. There was a time, the animal used to converse
like human beings. King Manuneeti Chozha
was turned out inconsolable after listening to the pathetic stories of the
mother cow. He lamented over his fate,
he was devastated at the death of the calf that too in the hands of his own
son. He was haunted with different
thoughts, as a King it was his responsibility to ensure the welfare of his
people and its subjects. All these years
he was protected them from the troubles and prompted them for impartiality and
morality. He desired for fair judgment
to the mother cow that appeared before him seeking justice for the death of its
calf from the hands of his son. The
scholars assembled were advised to follow some austerities to get rid of the
sin. But, King Manuneeti Chozha ordered his
ministers to produce his son before the court and the final verdict was followed,
the prince would face the same way of death as the calf had undergone. He would be pushed under the wheels of the
Chariot as a punishment for his sin. The
ministers were scared to death to perform such a terrible punishment; they ran
off from the place. As everyone was
witnessing the King carried out the punishment imposed upon his son. The crowd assembled were praised the graciousness
of their King and wept bitterly at the loss of their favorite prince. Instantaneously there appeared Lord Shiva with
Goddess Sri Parvati on their celestial vehicle bull and blessed the King
Manuneeti Chozha for his utmost integrity.
Soon, the calf and the prince got their life back and eventually the
prince was relieved out of the sin.
