Thiruchittremam / Chithaimur/Chittraimur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thiruvanur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva, the temple inscriptions reveal the contributions made by King  Koparakesarivarman of Madurai, King Rajakesari Varman, King Rajendra chozha, Tribuvana Chakravarthi, King Rajaraja Chozha, King Rajendra Chozha, King Varaguna Pandiya, King Vallabha Deva, King Sundarapandiya, King Venkatapathirayar of Vijayanagara Kingdom,

The legend has that there was a practice to deliver vessels of milk to the palace of the King ruled this city of Mutthapuram through this sacred land.   Strangely every time the vessels contained milk were fallen down at a particular spot, hence it was impossible to deliver milk at the destination.  This mysterious incident was repeated for quite some time, eventually it was reported to the King, an excavation process was carried out by the King’s men and eventually a Linga was found deep inside the Earth.  Shortly, a magnificent place for worship was erected in its place.
 
 
This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
