Thiruppathaleecharam/ Pamani/ Pampani/ Sarppapuram is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Mannargudi, Thiruvanur District, Tamil Nadu.  There are four kinds of temples in existence which are (1) Worshipped by deities Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Indra, Lord Chandra, Lord Surya, Lord Agni, Lord Varuna, Adishesha etc.,  (2) Worshipped by Sages and Rishis, (3) Worship places constructed by Emperors/Kings in gratitude on their triumph over enemies and (4)most significantly self-manifested.   In this temple Lord Shiva was worshipped by Lord Adishesha who was superior to Ashta Nagas{Ashtanagas are Lord Anantha, Vasuki, Dakshakan, Karkotaka, Sankhakapalan, Kulikan, Padman and Mahapadman} and Rahu & Kethu.

Worshipped by – Kamadhenu, Sage Sukala, Sage Dhananjaya (Adishesha originated from the Patal Loka and personified as Sage Dhananjaya)

The divine cow Kamadhenu was taken good care by Sage Sukala, he worshipped Lord Shiva with the milk provided by this divine cow.  Once, Sage happened to witness Kamadhenu shudder its milk on the Linga with adoration.   Sage Sukala hit the cow with extreme anger; he worried that the milk provided to him for the worship of Lord would considerably reduce due to this act of Kamadhenu.  Kamadhenu felt depressed at the ignorance of the Sage and rushed to the Linga, strongly banged its head on the Linga, the self-manifested Linga split apart due to the force applied and eventually Kamadhenu sacrificed its life in the holy pond situated here.  Instantly, Lord appeared before Kamadhenu and gave life to her.

Adishesha personified as Sage Dhananjaya and consecrated a Linga with raw sand and worshipped Lord Shiva on this sacred land.  This Linga was famously known as Naganathaswami, surprisingly sacred bath is performed on regular basis to this Linga made of sand unlike other temples.    Usually, no ritual bath is performed to the Linga consecrated with raw sand; instead it will be covered with shield made of precious metals.

Sannidhis – Lord Ganesha , Lord Subramanya with his consorts Goddesses Sri Valli & Deivayanai, Lord Surya, Lord Chandra, Goddess Sri Gajalakshmi, Sage Durvassa, Lord Ayyappa, Kalabhairava, Lord Saneeswara, Navagrahas, Nalvar,  Lord Nataraja & Goddess Sivakami, Lord Adishesha ( principal of Ashta Nagas - Ananthan, Vasuki, Dakshakan, Karkodaka, Sankhapalan, Kulikan, Padman, Mahapadman and Rahu & Kethu ), Lord Daskhinamurthi on Simhavahanam,

The legend has that there were four passionate disciples of Lord Dakshinamurthi arrived at Sri Vaikundham to worship Lord Vishnu.  Unfortunately, the Dwarapalaks (gate keepers) at Sri Vaikundham stopped them at the entrance itself.  The disciples were cursed the Dwarapalaks in an extreme distress and eventually they afflicted with the sin.  Shortly, they arrived on this sacred land and worshipped Naganathaswami and Lord Dakshinamurthi and got rid of their sins.

This temple remains open from 7.00 AM to 11.00 AM in the morning and 5.00PM to 7.00 PM in the evenings.
