Azhwars were Tamil poets; passionate devotees of Lord Vishnu lived between 6th and 9th centuries.  They composed marvelous verses praising the grandeur of Lord Vishnu in Tamil, these famous verses are collectively known as Divya Prabandham considered as the sacred Tamil Veda.  Azhwars were felt the perpetual presence of supreme Lord in their hearts and composed enthralling verses praising the unparalleled compassion of Lord.  These Azhwars have visited many sacred temples of Lord Vishnu and sung praising the glories of Lord was come to known as 108 Divya Kshetram.
 
1. Poigai Azhwar/ Poigai Piran/ Padma Muni/ was lived in 7th century; he was born in Kanchipuram in the Tamil month Aippasi with the birth star Sravana/Thiruvonam.  Poigai Azhwar composed 100 enthralling verses praising the glories of Lord Vishnu in his famous composition Muthal Thiruvandhadhi.  It is believed that Poigai Azhwar was the reincarnation of Conch/Panchajanyam, one of the Panchayudham of Lord Vishnu.
 
2.  Boothathazhwar was lived in 7th Century; he was born in Mamallapuram/Thirukadalmallai in the Tamil month Aippasi with the birth star Avittam.  Boothathazhwar composed 100 beautiful verses praising the grandeur of Lord Vishnu in his prominent composition Irandam Thiruvandhadhi.  It is believed that Boothathazhwar was the reincarnation of Mace/Kaumodhakee, one of the Panchayudham of Lord Vishnu.
 
 
3. Peyazhwar/Kairavamuni was lived in 7th century; he was born in Mylapore/Chennai in the Tamil month Aippasi with the birth star Sadayam.  Peyazhwar composed enthralling 100 verses praising the glories of Lord Vishnu in his famous composition Moondram Thiruvandhadhi.  It is believed that Peyazhwar was the reincarnation of Nandakam/Sword, one of the Panchayudham of Lord Vishnu.
 
 
4 . Thirumazhisai Azhwar/Mazhisaipiran/ Bhakthisarar/ was lived in 7th Century; he was born in a village called Thirumazhisai/Kanchipuram in the Tamil month Thai with the birth star Makh.  Thirumazhisai Azhwar described the grandeur of Lord Vishnu in his compositions Nanmugan Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruchandhavirutham which contains 96 and 120 verses respectively.   It is believed that Thirumazhisai Azhwar was the reincarnation of Sudarsana Chakra/Dice, one of the Panchayudham of Lord Vishnu.
 
5 .  Nammazhwar/Sadagopan/Parankusanayaki/ Sadari/Maran was lived in 9th Century; he was born in  Azhwar Thirunagari/Thirukkurugur in the Tamil month Vaikasi with the birth star Vishakh.    Nammazhwar in his stunning compositions Thiruvaimozhi (1102), Thiruvasiriyam (7), Thiruvirutham (100) and Periyathiruvandhadhi (87) sung praising the eternal glories of Lord Vishnu.   It is believed that Nammazhwar was the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu’s commander in chief Vishwaksena.
 
6 . Madhurakavi Azhwar/ Azhwarkalkku Adiyan was lived in 9th century, he was born in Thirukkolur in the Tamil month Chithirai with the birth star Chithirai.  Madhurakavi Azhwar composed Kannanin Siruthambu which contains 11 verses praising the everlasting beauty of Lord Vishnu.  It is believed that Madhurakavi Azhwar was the reincarnation of Vainatheya/Garuda/King of Birds, celestial vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
 

7 . Kulazhekara Azhwar /Koodalnayagan / Kollikavalan was lived in 9th Century, he was ruled Thiruvanchikulam as the capital of his Kingdom.  Kulazhekara Azhwar was born in the Tamil month Masi with the birth star Punarvasu.  He composed Perumal Thirumozhi which contains 105 beautiful verses praising the grandeur of Lord Vishnu.  It is believed that Kulazhekara Azhwar was the reincarnation of Kausthubam/necklace of Lord Vishnu. 
 
8 . Periyazhwar /Vishnuchithar / Bhattarpiran/ Srivilliputhooran/ was lived in 9th century; he was born in Srivilliputhur in the Tamil month Ani with the birth star Swati.  Periyazhwar was composed Periyazhwar Thirumozhi which contains 473 beautiful verses praising the glories of Lord Vishnu.   It is believed Periyazhwar was the reincarnation of Garuda/King of Birds, celestial vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
 
9 . Andal/Soodikodutha Nachiyar/Soodikodutha Sudarkodi/ Goda/ Godapiratti was born as daughter to Periya Azhwar in Srivilliputhur who was lived in 9th Century.  Andal was born in the Tamil month Adi with the birth star Pooram/Poorva Phalguni.  Sri Andal composed stunning verses praising the eternal glories of Lord Vishnu in Nachiyar Thirumozhi (143) and Thiruppavai (30).  It’s believed that Andal was the incarnation of Goddess Sri Bhoodevi consort of Lord Vishnu.
 
10.  Thondaradipodi Azhwar/Vipranarayana was lived in 8th century; he was born in Thirumandangudi in the Tamil month Markazhi with the birth star Jyeshta/Kettai.  Thondaradipodi Azhwar composed Thirumalai (45) and Thirupalliyezhuchi (10) praising the grandeur of Lord Vishnu.  It is believed that Thondaradipodi Azhwar was the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu’s floral garland Vanamala.
 
11. Thiruppana Azhwar/Panar/Munivahanar/Yogi Vahanar was lived in 8th Century; he was born in Uraiyur, Thiruchirapalli in the Tamil month Karthikai with the birth star Rohini.  Thiruppana Azhwar composed Amalananadhipiran (10) praising the glories of Lord Vishnu.  It is believed that Thippana Azhwar was the reincarnation of Srivatsam of Lord Vishnu.
 
12.   Thirumangai Azhwar/ Kaliyan/ Aalinadan/ was lived in 8th Century, he was born in Thirukurayalur in the Tamil month Karthikai with the birth star Kruthika.  Thirumangai Azhwar composed Periya Thirumozhi (1084), Thiruvezhkuttrirukkai (1), Thirukuruthandagam (20) and  Thirunedunthandagam (30).  It is believed that Thirumangai Azhwar was the reincarnation of Sarngam, bow of Lord Ram.
