The legend has that Thiru Gnana Sambandhar with a group of devotees arrived on this sacred land and found the tributary of river Cauvery was flooded and there was no ferry man available to cross this river to reach on the other side where Lord Vilvaneswarar temple was located.  The group of devotees were terrified, seeing their panicky state Sambandhar passionately sung praising the glories of Lord Vilvavaneswarar.  Shortly, Sambandhar and his followers were settled on an empty ferry without any boatmen, surprisingly the ferry safely landed on the banks with the grace of Lord.   Further,  Odathiruvizha celebrated in the month of Aippasi to commemorates the above incident.

This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.00AM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
