The legend has that a Brahmin who
was lived in this village of Nallur was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. He had two daughters and the elder daughter
one was married, shortly she was send back to her parental home as her husband
was leaving for Kashi Yatra. Soon, she was
afflicted with highly infectious viral disease causes permanent damage,
eventually she lost her eye sight and it poorly affected her personal
appearance. Later, the second daughter
who was married also came back to stay with her father. At this moment, the elder daughter’s husband
returned home after several years completing his Kashi Yatra. He was traumatized to see his wife and
mistook the second daughter as his wife.
The old Brahmin was miserable; he made several attempts to convince his
son-in-law about the incidents happened in his absence. The argument between them continued without
any fruitful resolution. The old Brahmin
earnestly prayed to Lord to find a way out of this critical problem. Lord Shiva appeared before them and commanded
that ‘Aval Ival’ to prove the statement of his zealous devotee. Thus this place has got its name Avalivanallur. Eventually, the elder daughter took a dip in
the Chandra Pushkarani located in this temple and regained her eye sight and
beautiful appearance once again. Thus,
this couple reunited and led a blissful married life with the grace of Lord.
This temple remains open from
6.30 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and
4.30 AM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
