The legend has that there was time the entire universe was predestined to deluge. Lord Brahma secured the essentials of creation along with the nectar of immortality in a pot, kept it safely on atop the hill situated here. At the time of deluge, the water swamped the whole area and the pot was floated for some time and finally settled in a sacred land came to known to as Kumbakonam/Kudamukku. Lord Shiva shot an arrow on the pot and the nectar of immortality stretched all over the place.  A Vilva leaf flew out of the pot and landed on this sacred land turned out Vilvavanam.    Hence, the presiding deity of this temple came to known as Vilvavanathar.

Another legend has that while holding the Universe with 1000 hoods Lord Adishesha realized the heaviness of it due to the increase of horrendous and innumerable sinners on the Earth.  At the divine instruction Lord Shiva, he arrived on this sacred land and sanctified a Linga. Lord Adishesha sincerely carried out the worship and gained the strength to hold the entire Universe with his one hood.
