The legend has
that King Dasaratha conducted a Putrakameshti Yagam with the guidance of Sage Rishyasrunga. In due course of time, Queen Kousalya,
Sumithra & Kaikeyi gave birth to four stunning male babies Rama, Lakshman,
Bharath & Shatrugna respectively.
Several years
later, Lord Rama was exiled from his Kingdom.
He set out to woodland with Goddess Sita and Lakshman and proved himself
as a devoted son to his father. During
their stay in a hermitage at Chitrakoodam Goddess Sita was abducted by the
demon King Ravana. Lord Rama along with
Lakshman desperately wandered all through the woods and arrived on this sacred
land. Lord Rama visited the hermitage of Sage
Rishyasrunga in Maduranthakam and narrated the distressing incident to Sage
Vibhandhaka, the son of Sage Rishyasrunga reassured and blessed Lord Rama to
locate Goddess Sita. In return, Sage
Vibhandhaka appealed Lord Rama to visit his hermitage after the successful
completion of the battle with the demon King Ravana.
After defeating
the demon King Ravana, once again Lord Rama along with Goddess Sita and
Lakshman arrived in Pushpaka Vimanam at the hermitage of Sage Rishyasrunga and
followed his promise to Sage Vibhandhaka.
Another legend
has that during the year 1795 - 1798 Colonel Sir Lionel Blaze was the District
Collector of Chengalpattu. The
Madhuranthakam Lake was being one of the vast lake overflows at the time of
heavy downpour and creates huge loss of lives and prosperities. Therefore, the rainy season has become a
menace for the entire villagers. As a
responsible officer, Sir Lionel Blaze conducted a meticulous inspection of the
place and halted here. During his
scrutiny he happened to view this beautiful temple of Kodhanda Ramar. He was awe struck at the marvelous
architecture and the myth of this temple.
His eyes fallen on the piled slabs and huge pillars kept on the corner,
he enquired the need of the same. He
came to know that the renovation and extension process of the shrine for
Janakavalli Thayar has put a halt due to the lack of funds. Sir Lionel Blaze promised that he would
precede the construction work of the shrine if the villagers were remain unaffected
by the rainstorm and hurriedly rushed out of the temple without paying visit to
the deities.
The work processes
to strengthen the boundaries were carried out at the strict instruction of Sir
Lionel Blaze. As usual down pouring was
at its peak; the lake was overflowed with torrential rain. Everyone gave up their hopes and anxiously
watched over the calamities. One night
of heavy down pour Sir Lionel Blaze visited the site and sensed the danger that
could cause mass destruction at any moment.
He worriedly walked through the site with accumulated terror. Soon, he found two well built young men with
bow and arrow were immersed in the inspection of the boundaries and
safeguarding the same. The thought about
the two men who were meticulously engaged in the self-less work were crossed
Sir Lionel Blaze’s mind repeatedly. It created huge respect towards the men who
were engaged in the scrutiny of the boundaries.
On next morning
Sir Lionel Blaze was astounded to see the tremendous changes in the environment. He hurried to the site and realized that the boundaries
were very well withstood the previous night’s dangerous rainstorm. Sir Lionel Blaze dashed to the temple during
the ceremonial hours; saw the sanctum sanctorum was remaining closed. Immediately, the doors of the sanctum were
opened for the public. Sir Lionel Blaze
was taken aback to see the two well-built young men in their royal attire in
the Sanctum. He was in a state of bliss declared that the
two men who were meticulously safeguarding the boundaries were none other than
Lord Rama and Lakshman; he earnestly expressed his desire to carry out the
construction of Shrine for Goddess Sri Janakavalli Thayar as promised earlier.
This temple
remains open from 7.30 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 8.30PM in
the evening.
