Narasinga Muniyar was born in Thirunavalur. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, chieftain
of Thirumunaipadi. He worshipped Lord
Thirunavaleswarar with his consort Goddess Manonmani in the temple located here.
He received the devotees of Lord with
utmost reverence and provided them with all the necessities. He found immense pleasure in serving Lord and
his devotees. He often conducts rituals
and fire sacrifices, invites Vedic Brahmin and devotees of Lord with due honor
in the collective worship of Lord. He receives
them with great honor and provides them with alms and necessities. Therefore,
devotees of the Lord were flown from different parts of the village to
Thirumunaipady. He served them with his
heart content, served them with food and provided them gold coins as alms.
As any other day, Narasinga Muniyar conducted a
ritual on the auspicious day of Thiruvathira, the place was over crowded with
the devotees of Lord. Suddenly, there appeared
a devotee dressed dreadfully; smeared ash marks all over his bare body and the
matted hair locks were adorned by Rudraksha.
The devotees gathered were stared at him in an aversion. Narasinga Muniyar leaped himself into the crowd,
he envisioned Lord in his guest who was dressed awfully and prostrated before
him. The crowds gathered were witnessed the
modesty of Narasinga Muniyar.
Narasinga Muniyar continued his self-less
service to Lord and his devotees for several years and finally attained the
Abode of Lord Shiva.
In the Tamil month Purattasi – Sathayam is
widely celebrated as Guru Puja Day, the day Narasinga Muniyar attained the
Abode of Lord Shiva.
