Thirunavalur /Thirunamallur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva and the Kings of Chera, Chola, Pallava and Pandyas were made abundance of contributions to this temple.

The legend has that Alalasundara was a close associate and fervent devotee of Lord Shiva served Lord at Mount Kailash.  He had the exquisite handsomeness of Lord Shiva.   Once he was assigned the task of collecting flowers from the garden, unfortunately on his way he met two beautiful maidens and fallen at their entrancing beauty.  As a result, he was deviated from his responsibility.  It irritated Lord Shiva and cursed him to born on Earth along with the two maidens.  Accordingly, Sundara was born to a temple priest at Thirunavalur.  He was brought up by this pious couple, afterwards the genius child who composed ‘Thiruthonda Thogai’ which paved the way for the creation of ‘Peria Puranam’ by Shekkizhar. Later, Sundarar was known to the world as Sundaramurthy Nayanar one of the prominent Shivaite Saints amongst the 63Nayanars.  Likewise the two maidens were born as Sangili Nachiyar and Paravai Nachiyar and married to Sundarar.





This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 12.00PM in the morning 4.30PM to 8.30PM in the evenings.
