The legend has that King Swethakethu of Ikshvaku
clan was a righteous ruler. During his
regime the people were happy and his Kingdom flourished with natural
resources. He and his chaste wife Damayanthi
underwent severe penance praying to Lord Vishnu to attain Sri Vaikundham with
their mortal bodies. They constructed a
massive inferno around them and worshipped Lord for several years. Though
they had reached their destination, unfortunately they did not bless with the dharshan
of Lord Vishnu at Vaikundham. Instantly, there appeared Sage Narada the
righteous couple prostrated before him and sadly enquired for their failure to
envision Lord Vaikundhanatha. Sage
advised King Swethakethu that though he was a righteous ruler, he did not do
any charities or Yaga or Yagnas all through his life on Earth. Further, he instructed the righteous couple
to worship Lord Airavatheswara cited on the river banks of Cauvery and with His
blessings they would be able to have dharshan of Lord Vaikundhanatha. The
King and his wife were distressed and returned to this sacred land at the
divine instruction of Sage Narada. They
observed strict austerities and worshipped Lord Airavatheswara. Lord
was pleased at the devotion of the couple and blessed them. Lord
Airavatheswar along with the King Swethakethu and his wife worshipped Lord
Vishnu on this sacred land, Sage Udhanga also joined with them and the penance continued
for several years. At last, the most
pleased Lord Vishnu provided Dharshan as Thiru Vaikundhanatha with Goddess Sri
Devi & Boodevi to them. Lord
Airavatheswarar prayed to Lord Vishnu to remain on this sacred land as
Vaikundhanatha and the place would be known as Vaikundha Vinnagaram. This is one of the holiest temples of Lord
Vishnu equivalent to Paramapadham-Sri Vaikundham.
This temple remains open from 7.00AM to 11.00AM
in the morning and 4.00PM to 7.00PM in the evenings.
